Germany's official Islam Conference, meeting for the third time, has agreed to allow state schools to introduce Islamic religious classes in German. The government-sponsored conference aims to promote better integration for the 3.4 million Muslims living in Germany

yay for reason!

i wonder how will they manage teaching evolution and stupid scripture together?

Can somebody please start another world war so Germany can get its balls back?

A good idea no matter what the far-right says. As the article stated many children get their eduction on Islam from private teachers that the government has no control over. Now that authorities have insight and control there will be no more fanatics educating the children. If this works out well it might be a chance to liberalize Muslims in Germany.

This.

Bah.

They should just adopt the policy of rounding up and executing extremists. Problem solved with no compromises for the education system.

Get rid of religious schools. Any bias is also removed. :imu:

lol. Hey they should also get religious teachers to register with the government and wear armbands!

sure. like it will be a problem for extremist teachers to indoctrinate them after school or use more subtle methods while in school.
i think we all know how well teachers follow rules.

To quote a typical Muslim reaction to spineless things like this - "ALLAHU AKBAR! - TAKBIR! *repeat a few times*"

This'll end up quite horribly, I think that's a fair prediction.

Religious schooling is a wacky idea. Religious schools should be optional "day care" centers, taken next to mandatory public schooling.

Religious schools of all types, both public and private, should be banned.

Lol, daydream.

It'll end badly, religion fanaticism isn't about misguided youth, its about religion being a extremely flawed and bigoted ignorant institution that gives succour to every half baked hatred towards others.

Why do you hate this person?, my faith justifies it.

It even gives excuse for my dislike of them.

People I might be indifferent to or like I now am more inclined to disregard as not worth my time simply based on the fact they irrationally latch onto a fairly tale and imaginative friend, except they use him to justify some pretty unjustifiable things. Or simply because they believe in something that is blatantly false.

Yah....

Plus religion in public schooling should be downright ****ing illegal, thank god it is in many countries.

I suspect this is far less interesting or controversial than most of you are giving it credit for. I had to go to a Roman Catholic school, yet much of the Religious Education classes were actually taken up with learning about non-Christian religions like Hinduism, Judaism, etc., and (if memory serves) I believe Islam was also on the curriculum.

It was all very dry, boring and like much of the rest of school, I can't remember anything about any of it. This bit of news makes it sound like Germany just added another bit of boring crap like that to their curriculum. As for whether they should or not, I'm of the opinion that there's as much worth in learning about the beliefs of various subsections of the community as there is to learning about how igneous rock is formed, or whatever. School will still be all about turning their youth into unquestioning sieg-heiling drones - just like in the UK! Big deal.

Reading the rather brief article, I kind of gathered this was a step AWAY from religious extremism.

I mean, the purpose of the ruling was to draw Muslims away from learning in independent religious institutions, right? What these kids will learn is going to be sanctioned by the German government, not by whatever German Islamic has the money and will to create a teaching institution. And considering the delicacy of the entire issue, they're going to choose their teachers VERY carefully.

Also, another really big question is what the German policy towards other religions is. Do they teach similar Christianity and Judaism classes? What are those like? Is it likely that the Islam class will follow the same format? We can't make many judgments without knowing those answers.

nurizeko: Religious fanaticism isn't about misguided youth? Dude, EVERYTHING that people do stems from the environment those people grew up in. Today's religious extremists were yesterdays misguided youths.

I'm a little iffy about your condemnation of religion being taught in schools. I agree, the primary goal of schools should be getting kids to make their own opinions and decisions based on available facts, a goal that most religious institutions run in opposition to. But it would be even worse to ignore the issue completely, and pretend that religion doesn't have dominating power of the entirety of world history and much of today's culture.

I dunno, perhaps we can both agree to saying "Enforcing a belief in a public school should be entirely illegal."
