Isn't HL2 maybe a bit too overhyped

Well you know what happened to DOOM 3 and there is no reason that this can't happen to Half-Life 2. The only thing that might save HL2 from being overhyped is that their community PR was far much better than id's and we know what we can expect from HL2. Id's PR failed to tell the people what D3 actually is, eventhough they were telling what it was but not good enough to de-hype it to a proper level.

Doom 3 was not over hyped!

What the hell is wrong with the morons on this forum? Doom 3 is extremely popular and extremely successful. There will ALWAYS be critics of huge titles like Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

As for id's PR failing to tell the people what Doom 3 actually is, WHAT?!. Are we talking about the same Doom 3? Because the one I played was exactly what we were told it would be.

the fans are the ones who really REALLY overhype the games.

But from everything i'd heard ID say about Doom 3, I was expecting a scary and original remake of Doom 3. But all i got with Doom with a better storyline. And less Hell levels. ALOT less

anyway lets not turn this into a Doom 3 VS HL2 thread.

no. half life 2 will live up to it's hype.

im possitive

omg m8 that was the point!!!! havent you realised that this is taking place as if doom and doom 2 never happened??!!! wtf is point of making an entirely new game and made it different to its 2 sequels???? doom is THE legend, no matter what anyone says. can you imagine the response if they made the game different to the first 2?? it would be the worst ever.

to enjoy the game, you have to think about what doom 3 IS and what it IS NOT. for doom 2 we said 'its doom all over again, but with more of everything that made it great in the first place.' this is the same again in doom 3. new enemies, physics, lighting, sound, graphics...i mean cmon!

although, what doom 3 is and what it isnt is more of a caution than a recommendation...dont get your hopes up too much. doom 3 is a great game..which i will play on the 13th aug :E , and i wont be worried if it has a rubbish storyline etc, just that it is the modern day doom.

but anyway, not to turn this into a doom3vhl2 thread aswell, hl2 will be what we dreamed of, and then some.

If you're looking forward to Doom 3 that much, you're going to be disappointed after about 5 hours of playing it. Trust me, most people were, i was.

Yes, most of the people were disappointed by D3 and I am too. I don't know what I was expecting D3 to be anymore. It's a perfectioned game and a really good remake, but it just doesn't live up the expectations I had.

Once you start playing HL2 you are going to think the hype was not enough for HL2, thats how big of surprise the game is going to be once we play it cause some of the stuff we are going to see is going to WOW us even more.

iD really kept the gameplay of Doom 3 a big secret....with good reason. There wasn't much to show except spamming guys in corridors.

Now that's good and bad. Bad because, pre-release people like me start to envision scenes in the game before it's out creating my own idea of how the game should be. I start imagining cool horror scenes that would be ****ing scary. One particular scene i imagined was this, the train scene: Your train stops at an airlock, you look to the left and see a scientist frantically banging on the door trying to get in. A demon drops down behind him then rams it's fist through his back straight out his chest and lifts the scientist in the air. The demon then drops the scientist to the floor. The demon turns and sees you in the train, it starts sprinting to the train then smashes it's fist through the window desperately trying to grab you. The airlock has opened but it's only wide enough for the train to move through, off it goes severing the demons arm. You think your safe except the arm is still spasming on the ground as if it's still trying to get you. You blow it away with your shotgun.

I was hoping for more things like that in Doom3. But the more i progressed the more i was presented with mosters just spawning in from the no-where and monsters appearing from dark corners/behind magic walls. I'm sure some people would enjoy that immensely but i just found it cheap and almost tacked on compared to the amount of effort they put into creating the look and atmosphere of the levels. I think iD took a big gamble in that respect.

Valve has shown us in extreme depth and detail what the gameplay is going to be like through the BINK videos. So i guess the hl2 hype is based of hard evidence, it just looks like it'll be an amazing amount of fun to play. The doom 3 hype was based off imagination and mystery, iD kept the thing under wraps for so long.

Then is it over-hyping when everything they are saying about is true or even more then we are expecting ?

Doom 3 was a big letdown by most people, me included.
It's fun a couple of hours, then you can play MP on the internet for 1 hour more, maybe a couple more at LAN with your friends.
Say whatever you want, but most people expected a better game.
ID never said this was going a mediocre game.

SPELL CHECK FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET ONE FOR THIS KID.....

HL2 is not over hyped, not at all. VALVe has been a great job.

Mark my words.

HL2 is the second coming of Christ in videoplayable form.

I don't see HL2 living up to the hype currently placed on it it may still be a very good game but mark my words there will be people who hate the game and won't be shy about it either.

Doesn't that mean that all VCR tapes will be destroyed?

HL2 is more over-hyped than doom3 was. I'm sure it will be great, but damn, just look at all the threads on the GAME. Imagine if Monopoly or Risk got this kind of hype...

And yes, Doom 3 was a major let-down. I still haven't beaten it because it's so monotonous, I end up cheating just to fly through the levels after a while.

OMG WTF Monoopoly sucks! It takes like 6 hours just do a single multiplayer game!!!
And it's got no replay value. It's just the same thing over and over again!
Roll dice, buy property, go to jail. Totally worthless! The developers should have put some more effort into MAKING THE GAME GOOD. And maybe put a single player mode in too.

Risk is for loooosers.

you're kidding right?

Half-Life 2 is the most over-hyped game ever.
You'd have to be blind not to realize this.

YOU ARE THE BLIND ONE!!! HL2 WILL BE THE BEST GAME EVAR!!!!11

do I really need the sarcasm tags?

Half-Life 2 will be what Half-Life 1 is with a better story line, great gameplay and some awseome graphics, but like it was said, Half-Life has always had a nice story and gameplay, doom was just killing and shooting which can get pretty boring after a few hours. ;)

I'm not sure how anyone can say that HL2 is overhyped. If anything it is underhyped by everyone except the very small minority of people who post on forums like this one.

The number of people I know who play games (lots of them) and know almost nothing about HL2 is amazing.

Hype rests to the community's shoulders. Valve, if anything, is releasing information, not hyping the game. If Gabe responds to an email with information the community reacts back "OMG Gabe emailed me" if Valve says no more new screenshots until the game is released the community reacts "OMG the game is near completion I am going to buy 1 gig of ram and a 4 Radeon 98000XTs!" If Valve says "Preloading begins Aug 18th" the forums crawl because the community is on the forums trying lap up any info on it.

The only alternative is for Valve not to say anything. Then one day your shopping at the store and see Half Life 2 on the shelves and then instead of people accusing Valve os overhyping a game they will say the game must not be any good since they never released any information.

Seriously, until Gabe is riding around with a tricycle in town square with a megaphone advetising Half Life 2 it is not overhyped.

I dont think we can even say if its over-hyped or not. We dont know what they haven't showed us yet. So If we start playing the game and see all this new stuff it will definatly live up to our expectations. But even if it is overhyped, thats just for HL2 singleplayer. There is still multiplayer, and all the mods that will come out.

Just like Half-life, I think I spent more time playing mods then I did HL.

That's because Half-life 2 isn't living....yet. September 30, anyone?

I don't think Half-Life 2 is overhyped, in the sence that Valve and the gaming community in general is hyping the game too much. However, I think the Half-Life 2 community, especially the people on this forum, are overhyping the game for themselves.

I didn't read much of this, but here's my opinion:

Doom 3 didn't exactly live up to it's hype, so, it was a little over-hyped, though it is still a very good game.

I don't know if it's possible for Half-Life 2 to live up to it's hype, but I think it will...or come close.

If you guys keep asking yourselves if its over-hyped you will probably make it over-hyped. Just give it up and wait for the game. Until the game is out you will never know the answer to this question.

Dude, september 27th last year it was hyped, december 11th last year, it was over-hyped. By now, its passed beyond the expectations of a computer game, it has gained the status of divine intervention to most of us here.

I quite ignored D3, the only thing I had seen of it we're a couple of oooold pre-renders. So I thought: "This game must be good because everyone is talking about it and I haven't hyped myself yet.".

Unfortunately, although unhyped by myself, I still thought it sucked (after completing the game yesterday).

I know this isn't going to happen with HL², because I played the leak. That leak, that unfinished piece of buggy code and missing models, was waaaaay better than all of D3. I'm not saying it was a good thing to have played it, but it did seriously restore my faith in HL². It is also the reason I'm not overhyped; I know what to expect. So there ^_^

I know, I am dieing to get this game. I've been waiting FOREVER. I too expect alot from it. But what im saying is asking the question ,"IS HL2 OVER-HYPED?", is not going to help the matters. Asking this question makes people start to wonder if it is. Maybe Im wrong, i dont care. Im just saying whenever people ask questions like these it makes me start to think. And I personally dont want to think its over-hyped. :O

Hmm let's see I was looking forward to doom 3 for quite a while and was more than happy with the game. I don't know where you're getting your facts from about most people not being happy with it, probably HL2 fanboys that warezed the game.

Asking will HL2 ever be over-hyped is like asking whether Munro will ever stop wearing frilly underwear. In a sense, no.

ummm... it's pretty much impossible to tell if a game is overhyped before it's released. the very word "overhype" suggests comparing how much advertising and talking up something is compared to how it lives up to these claims and hype. well we don't know if it's overhyped, underhyped, or what... and it's impossible to tell until we play the game.
