BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- A U.N.-brokered cease-fire took effect Monday morning on the 34th day of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, although both sides launched final attacks only minutes ahead of the deadline.

YES!! Finally Peace! (well a cease-fire :p)
I didnt want to post yet another Israel-Hezbollah thread, but i figured this is important enough, and wanted to express my joy that this ****ed up situation didnt escalate to a whole regional war.

It is ****ed up both sides launched final ENORMOUS attacks. Israel made huge attacks in South Lebanon minutes before the UN deadline, and Hezbollah fired a new impressive record of 250 rockets into Israel!!

No matter what you support, this cease-fire is a positive step, and a great relief imo.

I think it's ridiculous that both sides continued bombing right up to the deadline, how many people died in the last day needlessly so both sides could uselessly excercise their miliatry muscle? Both sides should've showed some respect for life and called it quits( in terms of bombing) the seconds the UN agreement was offically planned.

A step in the right direction... but only if it remains honored. It's easy to agree to something and then not keep your word. Especially in situations like those.

And yes, that is terrible they kept at it so close to the deadline. But to be honest, they probably have no real desire to stop... either side. And so they wanted to get in as much as they could before the magical number arrived.

Another completely pointless conflict over..for now. Israel didn't destroy Hezbollah, Hezbollah didn't destroy Israel. I don't think Israel got back their 2 soldiers, but lost many soldiers. OVer 900 Lebanese civillians killed, over 100 Israeli civillians killed. Billions of $$$ damage to Lebanon.

GG morons.

Both sides are completely retarded.

I guess the Israel has lost more than 2 soldiers.

Quite a nice "attempt" for Israel in elimination of Hezbollah.
I should not laugh :X

Well at least the killing has stopped for the time being. Anybody want to place bets on how long it'll last before things kick off again?

Heh, that all depends on what the international force along with the Lebanese army get done in the South.

I think that either Hezbollah or Israel will break the cease-fire soon, but I hope it will last for at least a couple of months.

Cease-fires are just that. They are temporary, renewed violence is 99% likely.

conversely, north and south korea are in this condition.

My money would be on Isreal to break the cease fire. They have a record of breaking cease fires as soon as they get a good target. Then again, I wouldnt put it past Hezbollah either...

All they need is one trigger happy 18 year old israeli soldier on the border.

You lost. On the forenoon, a Hezbollah assaulted on a Israeli soldier. The soldier returned fire, killing the Hezbollah. I think it is on the news since I heard it on the radio.

Where is the Israeli cheque to Lebanon? Anyone hear anything about it yet?

looks like hezbollah won since all they needed to do is survive and show the rest of the arab world that israel isnt invincible they've also got most of lebanon supporting them now
