Helloo,

I've been a bit stupid. My old graphics card won't support directx v9, so i removed it in an attempt to play portal. Now i can't play half life 2, because windows won't let me install any version of directx. I've done the whole reboot to install 8.1., that doesn't work. Please help.

wrong forum. However what gfx card and operating system do you have?

Sorry about the wrong forum.

Old geforce4 mx440, with XP pro.

Questions:

What was the old graphics card that you removed? The mx440?
Are you just using on-board graphics now or did you replace the old card with a newer card? Which one?

I haven't removed the old card, i uninstalled directx. I was just really dumb, and removed the directx that came with windows. hence why i'm screwed.

Oh, duh. I knew I'd read that wrong :P

I don't think I can be much more help since I've never had to deal with this...but what is the error message or problem when you try to reinstall a version of DirectX?

Also, google is your friend.

mx440? I think I have one of those around here.
It sucks.

Ok, the mx 440 is going to cause you problems frankly, simply due to age. However, if your problem is simply that you can't find directx to download, the link can be found here

If your problem is that you have the link, but are getting errors, post what erros you are getting and we will try to help.

The errors are:

--------------------
[12/25/07 23:46:56] module: dxupdate(Oct 22 2007), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 189, function: GetDXVersion

Failed API: RegQueryValueEx()
Error: (2) - The system cannot find the file specified.

Current DirectX may be a older version which does not have the version value in the registry.

Every time i try to install it, i get told that it's done, only to go to dxdiag in command to see that it hasn't. Would reinstalling service pack 2 help. Thanks for all the help.

try doing windows update first.

also how did you uninstall it? there are many different ways of "uninstalling" something from the computer

the mx440 will not run portal,ep2,or tf2 because they require a dx8 supported card. the mx440 only supports up to 7. the support has nothing to do with the software so its best to keep the direct x software at its latest version. hl2 on the other hand works with dx7 so you should be fine there if you use the mx440.

I think the best solution will be buying new pc:)
