Well, I just started getting into world politics, news and all that jazz about two years ago, and I have pretty much followed most print news sources, such as TIME, The Economist, RD. Only recently did I venture onto the Internet for news. And mind you, I live in an Asian Nation which has rather close ties to USA (Wait, I'll explain) From what I had read over the 2 years,

I only knew that George W. Bush had won his election fairly, without any problems whatsoever, and he was a perfect person, having had successful businesses, having abolished abortions (meh) cut marriage taxes, saved the US Economy after 9/11, and all that jazz. The only bad thing mentioned was the fact that he attacked Iraq over "WMD's" which he found none. So I believed, and I watched the movie Fahrenheit 9/11..

Now, I'm not saying I should believe this movie completely (Just watched a bit of it today in English Class), but I must say the information I found out shocked me, because I had never read about it anywhere on the Singapore News Channels, Print, Papers everything. I don't care if you say I'm living under a rock, but I just found out about how Al Gore was to win the elections, but Bush won instead due to a displacement of 16 000 voters in Florida who were deemed not to have the right to vote, and his possible relation with the vote counter in Florida. I just found out about his relation (both his Dad and Him) with the Saudi's, including Osama's family. I found out that his failed oil businesses were funded by the Saudi's (not too sure if this is right). I found out that a day after the 9/11 incident, they sent the Bin Laden family back to Saudi Arabia from the US (the only one's who actually travelled by air that day) without even questioning them since they could be possible suspects or to get information.

And most shockingly, when Bush got elected back then, I was pretty darn sure I saw as a kid back then of how Bush was inaugurated as President of the United States without a hassle and how everyone was cheering for him. Then I found out that people were throwing eggs at his car, and rioting because the voting was unfair.

Wtf. I'm still scratching my head in confusion whether to take all this in or not, and I still haven't finished watching the movie yet. I've come to one conclusion though, I've been fooled. How come Singapore, my country, which has close ties with the US not even publish a single bit of this information anywhere? I've been fooled?

Don't feel too bad. I live in this country and I got suckered into voting for Bush.

I completely adopted my dads political views as my own, and sort of let them seep into my reasoning.

Mmmm beef.

On topic, you have seroiusly just found out that George Dubya Bush is an incompentent and lieing bastard. I mean this is the guy who said: "Our goal is a democracy in Germany" and "I love using the google".

Also, as far as I am aware he didn't get rid of abortions.

Wow, you had a pretty ass-backwards view of him. Welcome to the internet, the last bastion of enlightenment.

It's actually quite endearing. You know, in a "kids say the darndest things" kinda way.

Ultimately, his personality and "charm" are why he was elected. It's the same reason Clinton was elected, it's the same reason Blair was elected, and it's the same reason Obama will get elected. Noone really has anything to offer in politics anymore, so people just go for the most interesting character. Let's face it, Al Bore, John Kerry, Iain Duncan Smith and John McCain are just as useless but completely uninspiring at the same time.

you monster!!!

what does your dad think of bush now? you should ask him but say "where's yur messiah now?" the next time bush does something stupid/evil

to OP: dont worry, asian countries with strong ties with the US often censor information ..just ask Numbers

I don't want to speak for Raziaar but if his dad is anything like mine as far as he is concerned Bush only looks bad because of the left wing media. Typical Rush ditto-head that you will probably never change but you keep on trying.

Obama will get elected
Holy crap, add that as another item to the short list of things me and repiv actually agree on ;).

ya you can always pick a bush supporter by how much they hate CNN ..the "evil left" as they put it :upstare:

Because Singapore is a totalitarian one party state with limits on civil and political liberties. I hope I haven't offended.

I love American Politics & find the country & its history v fascinating. It must be hard to govern, no matter how many lackies surround you!

I try & enjoy/focus on the pros, which are many.

not really because while fox"news" is a bastion of conservative idiocy cnn isnt the same to the left ....cnn is nowhere near left of the political spectrum

Yeah, liberal bias doesn't exist on a network level like it does with Fox, but I would say you could find it in individuals.

well to fair most of the time I cant tell if an american means "democrat" when he says liberal or liberal ideology in general as the democrats are more centre than left of centre. I've certainly seem my share of right wingers who dont see a distinction ..anyone who doesnt subscribe to their POV is liberal

Who else thinks that Bush will go down as the worst president in US history?

If not worst, 2nd worst. Hey, 2nd place aint bad.

Everybody will pick Jimmy Carter as the 1st worst for some retarded reason.

rofl at "use the google" tags. I go "B'awwww!" every time I see ol' bushykins. Then grumble.

reagan was worse than carter ..carter had the stain of the botched mission to rescue american hostages and depending on what side of the political side of the fence you're sitting there's also the camp david accords

here's a chart that tracks increases in national debt according to president

I'm still giving my vote for worst to Harrison. 1st thing he does in his presidency leads to his death.

I remember reading a little sign in, i wanna say the state representative's offices in Washington DC that said "Your share of the national debt"--~$54,000. Which is only an average of the debt divided by the total population (every man, woman, child). This was back in the Summer of '07. If i remember correctly that was it.

DC is a neat little trip, pretty interesting stuff. :afro:

My dad still supports bush... which really makes me mad.

My parents are traditionally right fielders, but even they know when to stop blindly thinking Bush is the best thing ever. They got tired of his decisions awhile ago, and don't consider him a very good leader.

In regards to the original post... just remember that all media is biased and skewed by definition. Very few sources are completely unbiased, as any source that is trying to make a name for itself will have an agenda. And when I say "very few" I mean there probably isn't one.

It's very hard to research someone or something, especially in a political context, and make informed opinions on those conclusions. Most people simply don't have the determination to do it, and for those who do, decisions of leaders often create equal worses than they do goods, so it comes down to a question of ethics. It is important, however, for everyone to think for themselves and have the fortitude to stand up for your beliefs. You can't ask a man for much more.

Reagan was terrible domesticially, I agree with that, but he did have a role in ending the Soviet Union (although how big that role was is up for debate).

imho he's been given too much credit on that front ..in many ways he probably escalated tensions and made things worse, specifically by reigniting the arms race and engaging the soviets with proxy wars ..he practiced cowboy diplomacy, was arguablly mentally unbalanced and wasnt the sharpest tool in the shed

Clearly the yankees need to re-elect Bill Clinton. Maybe if they re-elect him "by proxy" it'll get rid of the debt?

I dont care about the debt, at least in as far as it doesnt affect my country's economy (which it does at some level) ..I'm more concerned over military spending which usually means some country or other will be wtfpwned ..sooner or later they're coming for canadians ..thar be oil in canada, probably as much as the middle east ...I'm taking out at least a dozen or so before they take me ..WOLVERINES!!!

Why would we come after Canada? You guys are mostly white, and americans feel very uneasy about killing white people in their name. Add a little shade of brown to their skin and then its no problem.

there's aboriginals in canada too ..plus our fair share of darkies ...besides we dont need to be dark, all we need is to support terrorism, which we do by helping america in afghanistan <buh-dum-dish> ..oh wait that doesnt sound right ...we allow gays to marry other GAYS!!! at the very least we're sinners, which would appeal to pretty everyone south of the mason dixon line (and some above it too)

So I believed, and I watched the movie Fahrenheit 9/11..
I don't like Bush but Fahrenheit 9/11 is not a good source of unbiased informations, in fact it's pretty ridiculous "documentary". GWB is far from good president but he's not a bloody evil genius.

Stern, don't be stupid, it's not funny.

From what I remember about Bush and getting elected was this. You had Al Gore winning everything but the stupid old people in Florida couldn't punch a hole through a ballot card. So many of them were tossed out. Many also stayed in and the majority voted for Bush. Now my theory is that old people figured he was a nice young man and promised them health care. He was also the son of George H. Bush. So this is what really happened:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PDyXgHCoHA
Then when he got in I specifically remember thinking "oh SHIT...I hope he does his job good then". He started instantly partying following many golfing games on his ranch. Not doing anything in office nor any promised health care reforms. Then he started oil drilling in wildlife refuges in Alaska. Then 9/11 happened and excuse my French but the shit hit the fan. Fast forward to 2004 and the media was bashing Bush a lot. Celebrities were all promoting Kerry. In the debates Bush was making angry/confused faces. Meanwhile while Bush was shooting his mouth off, Kerry was making notes on what to say when it was his turn, smiling.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrXXa1_oArM&feature=related
The main reason why he was voted in 2004 was he had:
  1. Family Values
  2. Opposed stem cell research, and abortions.
  3. Anti-Gay
  4. Christian
  5. Fights terrorists, yeehaw, etc...
The majority actually saw Kerry ironically though unfit to lead the country in war and thought more terrorist attacks would happen. I mean you had everybody making fun of Bush and everybody knew he was a dolt. People were scared that Kerry would get us in trouble though. Also the scare of Kerry flip-flopping which he never did in the first place. My parents voted for so far Gore, Kerry, and since I'm able to vote now, Hillary. My aunt though re-elected Bush but now regrets it. According to the South from my opinion, they voted Bush because they were afraid of terrorists and he was anti-gay. Many Republicans re-voted for those reasons even though they hate him. Yet I can't really say that though because PRATICALLY THE ENTIRE COUNTRY RE-VOTED FOR THE DOLT:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ge2004.svg/350px-ElectoralCollege2004.svg.png *P.S Laura needs to be slapped to get her googly eyes looking straight and Condoleeza needs braces ffs. Also we have been on a steadily decline ever since. The stock market is just another new crisis with oil yet again.

I don't quite get what you were fooled about... your confusion is leaking.

Fahrenheit 9/11 didn't get particularly much "media attention" at all in England, and as with anything you take it with a pinch of salt. It's just another side of the story. Half of it is probably wrong, but then half of "George Bush will be good for the country" is bollocks, and between there it's just based on your opinions.

Sure, the president's a bad egg. What the hell can you do? Just be thankful he only gets two terms?

I guess you are right. I'm not planning to take all this information seriously though (the movie) and to No Limit, no offence taken. Singapore is a pretty darned one-party (People's Action Party for the past 40 years) nation which nods its head at every move US makes.
