.... and I've got to say I didn't know what I was missing out on. This was truly one of the best games I've ever played. The only reason I decided to play it was because MGS4 was coming out and I wanted to find out what all this "hype" was about. I decided to revise over the storyline to get prepared for it. I came to the conclusion that I had to play exleast one MGS game before I played MGS4 so I played the original. It was like playing Half-Life for the first time all over again. I loved how Hideo tackled the modern day issue of nukes and the cold war etc. The gameplay still has lot of depth 10 years after it was released. Imagine the depth back then. I honestly cried when
When snake found out that Meryl was dead (yes I gave into the torture).
But anyway I've got ask you.... do you think I should play through MGS2 and MGS3 to?
I mean I want to play them but I really want to find out the fate of snake. Do you think it will make a difference on how I play the game? I already know that
that snake goes back to Shadow Moses
but nothing else. What do you think hl2.net?

Do eet

MGS2 is not as good imho, MGS3 is brilliant, especially subsistance (Secret Theatre woooooo)

Yes. If you liked any of the MGS games then there's absolutely no reason for you to skip any of them.

I suppose but I would probably be playing so much MGS that I would eventually get sick of it. It happened to me with Half-Life. But I will probally play through the rest of the games and then maybe have breaks in between or something.

The only thing I can actually hate in the MGS series is MGS4's ending. ****, that was way to long to make a few points!
Definately play MGS 2, and then definately play MGS 3!

Pace yourself if you have to, but don't play them out of order.

I know a lot of people didn't like MGS2's story, and for valid reason ... but it's still my favorite game. The gameplay was an absolutely perfect refinement of MGS1 and collecting dogtags gave me more replay than any other single player game ever. While MGS3 and MGS4 were still amazing, the way they fundamentally shifted the gameplay made them lose the simplicity and refinement of the first two games.

And when you play MGS3, be damn sure you get Subsistence. The 3D camera makes all the difference in the world.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is without a doubt Kojima's best work in my opinion, but most people don't really look into the deep story and meanings and instead bitch about Raiden.

I found this essay on MGS2 (It's rather long and contains spoilers but a good read):

http://www.deltaheadtranslation.com/MGS2/DOTM_TOC.htm

I've read quite a few parts of it and it really got me thinking.

All the MGS's (except Portable Ops) have very good/interesting stories.

YES!! Start with MGS, then MGS2, then MGS3. They are all some of the best games of their time (or any time actually). MGS4 references all of them and it is exceptionally interesting to go back and play them all in order and then play 4 again. Truly amazing storytelling.

I got my PS1 stolen by some douche bag.. I had MGS1 too, but he also stole that..

I haven't played past the top of the elevator at the start... dammit.

Download it for the PC then, otherwise use a PSX emulator on your PC.

I don't like MGS4, the AI sucked and the infinite spawning is horrific.

If you have a GameCube or Wii, pick up Twin Snakes too. All the awesome gameplay of MGS2 put into the original. And only get Subsistence if you're gonna play 3. The camera and the wealth of extras, including the original Metal Gears, mean you'll be missing out on a hell of a lot if you don't.

The Metal Gear Solid series is a love it or hate it affair. I love it and hate it in equal measure. The gameplay is more often than not fantastic; the production values are incredibly high and it just oozes quality. You can't deny that. But it's also shite. It's a physical manifestation of Kojima's ego. His storyline, for the most part, is complete bollocks. He can't really tackle any theme – he forces it down the players throat because as a storyteller, he has no subtlety. He drives things at you like a freight train. There is no excuse for such excessive cutscenes, worthless banter and needless codec conversations.

And the thing I hate most about him is his ability to ruin the rest of the game with a single twist at the end. This occurred in both MGS2, MGS3 and MGS4. It worked extremely well in MGS3 – it carried a lot of emotional weight. But the final twists in MGS2 and 4..***ined the rest of the game, and there's no taking that back once it's happened.

He isn't a very good storyteller.

Lets not jump to conclusions people! I almost had a PS3. But I backed out of it. No, I downloaded all of the cutscenes and watched them. What I meant was, it ruined the plot for me.

That probably has something to do with you downloading all the cutscenes and watching them.

You did the right thing.

You ... who bitch the loudest and hardest about the story ... circumvented the entire game just to watch the cutscenes, missing some of the best game design ever.

Why?

You think I was going to pay 300 pound just to find out who and what the Patriots were? That perhaps after playing all 3 games, I wasn't just a little curious as to the overall picture? The story may be crock, but I was still very interested in seeing it conclude. And I will play the game eventually, and yes, I do think it looks good, and yes I am aware I have farted on the experience. Thanks for rubbing it in, jerk.

Haha, I wasn't trying to be an ass. Just thought it was ironic that you experienced the game entirely through cut scenes as that's the part you seem to particularly hate.

As far as the story ... I was actually engrossed during the first half of MGS4. It was fairly well written and well structured and I was amazed. Then in the second half (starting around Europe really) it started to descend into familiar territory.

Hey, the irony is not lost me, nor was it during watching. ;)

Snake? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEE!!!

Or the story's just needlessly overwrought and silly.

So he's kind of like the Wachowski brother of gaming? Great look, action and set pieces, but full of people with dodgy hair cuts and fashion sense talking incomprehensible bollocks throughout ?

where did you download them from

They are available on YouTube. Konami tries to hold them back but GOD DAMMIT THEY WON'T STOP US.

You should absolutley play through the Metal Gear Solid series, it would nonesense not to.

Speaking of MGS, while I was away at my sister's apartment, I played the first MGS, for old times sake. You could say It's revived my interest in the series (not enough to buy a PS3 though).

I downloaded MGS1 for the PC last week. Played it on a gamepad. And it's ****ing amazing.

I could do without the perfectly-timed deaths of important characters that prevent Snake from learning vital information, though.

But anyway I've got ask you.... do you think I should play through MGS2 and MGS3 to?

Yes, MGS2 and 3 are both very relevant to the entire last act, especially the ending

Also, they're both awesome games so not playing them is like "I DUN WANNA PLAY A FUN GAME DERRKA"

Also, I beat MGS4 today and it was the perfect way to end the series, tons of cutscenes at the end but they didn't feel like MGS2's where they slammed as much info as they could at the end. Also liked:

The fight on top of the sub with liquid-revolver, was a nice look back at the past titles. Shadow Moses was also amazing, really made you realize how far the game had come. And when Big Boss came out after the credits, I nearly shat myself

Goddamn it why did you post a spoiler! My finger is itching to click show.
