IVP Failed -- Crash

In HL2 at the N.L.O. part of the game (where you arrive at the N.L.O. base right in time to shoot down some attacking gunships) I keep getting this error message within minutes of loading:

IVP Failed at ..\ivp_utility\ivu_vhash.cxx157

I've googled this error and it seems like the only solution people are offering is to validate the game files. I tried that, to no avail. I've tried starting from different saves and I've also tried uninstalling / reinstalling. Looking at all the complaints about it for other Valve games, I don't have much hope this will be fixed, but it's worth a shot. Here are my comp specs:

Windows 7 x64
Intel i5 2.27 ghz
4 GB ram
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670

Something you could do is turn off steam community in game, that occasionally solves source engine problems. If that doesn't work, try defragmenting the hl2 files. If that doesn't work, I'd try verifying the integrity of the game cache again for the heck of it.
