What's with them? They never end (Except for the 'Chobits' one, lasted 8 books before the storyline ended), their art styles don't differ very much, and you can't stop reading them. :hmph:

Perhaps it's because I have nothing else to do in my free time, but nowadays I read keep reading Japanese manga, while also trying to learn some Japanese (schoolwork).

My friends keep lending me manga books (Just yesterday, a friend lent me "Hayate the Combat Butler" (WTF kind of title is that?, rather funny though.)) I've read the 14 currently out books of "Full Metal Alchemist" (and the anime, as well), and I've just finished "Chobits".

Some I read for the laughs (HCB), some I read for the story and setting (FMA, Chobits), and some I just read to pass the time.

Meh. I've always disliked manga, I saw it as a degenerate form of entertainment, but I have to admit that there are some good manga out there.

NO! I'm only learning Japanese so I can use my basic communication skills to say "Surrender! Hands up! Throw down your weapons!"

I enjoy few manga, I own Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&, which are both funny/cute/fun, and that's pretty much the only type I enjoy. Then again, I've not really looked around at much else, I know I dislike anything involving fighting, but I have seen the animated series of Chobits, and it is excellent... I really like the deep storylines like that. FLCL is great too.

Also, I feel everyone who says "manga is teh suxxors" is being extremely judgemental, and either has never read ANY manga, or has only read one and made his/her judgement, which is like eating pizza and then saying "Italian food sucks!"

So please, go away, you are contributing nothing to the thread unless you have a valid backup point and more than 4 pages of experience with it.

Me too, actually. I've read probably only 6 different manga in my life. Yeah, Chobits does have deep storylines, and a somewhat philoshpical bent to it as well.

Manga fighting is too.... freaky.. for my taste, but I like the battle scenes in Full Metal Alchemist. Probably because it doesn't overdo the super-enrgy-burst-things, and has guns.

Only heard of FLCL, though.

That's the point: to keep suckers like you buying the magazines.

Ah, but I don't buy the magazines. I borrow the books from friends and libraries..

Well, I haven't ever heard of it untill now.:P But anyway... manga is teh suxorzesss:laugh:

I havent read alot of manga in my days, but I've been watching some anime. There's a lot of things I dislike about it but they also got some interested bits. It's a pretty interesting medium to analyse.

I recommend Serial Experiments Lain (Alice is my avatar. Very deep and philosophical), Saikano (Really enjoyed this one, the ending is great), Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and Last Exile. All interesting in their own way.

Last Exile, only seen a few of the animated series, and the gunfights are somewhat stupid (0 casulties after a few thousand bullets, anti-air can't hit shit), but I liked it anyway.

(Chobits, book 3, found it on Naver books)

I've read lots of manga. And I still say it sucks. A lot of them were in series, but it's basically "you seen one, you seen 'em all."

They each have completely different genres... I have no idea how you could say that. You must have read books of one genre. The only thing similar about them is the art. And that's hardly the main focus here, these are stories, there are lots of them, and nobody should be able to say they all suck. I seriously doubt you've read a few of each type, so you should change your post to say "I don't like fighting manga; I don't like romance manga; or whatever.

I don't like the manga I have read. And I do not wish to read any more of any genre.

I hate the anime style of drawing.

Can't be a real japanese manga comic, they're all fully clothed and not being raped by tentacles.

the weird part about manga is that its the only way to leagaly watch small children have sex.....which is kinda disturbed.

From what I've seen, manga are dumbed down books with shitty art tacked on.

Manga? Or Mango?

Think about it!
REEEEEEEEEEEEEADING RAINBOW!!!!

Ok seriously i cant; stand sailor moon type drawings...they REALLY piss me off. Now if you want good manga here are some extremely good ones to read:

Akira (probably the best comic/animated movie ever made)
Monster (one of the greatest plots/plot twists)
Death Note (each page just gets better and better)

I miss that show...

a reading rainbow!

But anyway, I love anime..don't get me wrong, It's just a funny stereotype to go on about.

Oh, you mean, it being drawn? Yes, drawn is pretty much the only way isn't it? The fact that the only drawings you have (seen? :X) were done in the manga style means nothing. It's like saying oh, live action movies are done with real people, but so is porn! It must be perverted!

Lot of ignorance in this thread. There always is. Go make yourself a manga hate-thread if you feel such a need to tell everyone.

I do understand the stereotype and that some seemingly innocent anime has ... well, risque women in them. I don't really find it funny anymore because it's all I ever hear when the subject of manga or anime is brought up.

Uriel, you're the definition of an annoying little kid who thinks he's cool, and who imitates everything he hears or sees in an attempt to "fit in".

That's the one and only thing I'm going to say to you.

I'm getting chastised in a Manga thread........

And, TBH, you're the definition of an annoying nerd what likes anime :/

Well maybe I never really liked your doodles of various forum members...

:( I can't do this.

The ironic thing is, I'm getting lectured about maturity in possible defense of anime.

Now, you watch anime, and you are lecturing me.....about maturity.....

Review this and get back to me

Well I said I wasn't going to, but since you kindly requested, I'll just say that you're only proving how ignorant you are by defining that all anime is immature.
I don't even know what anime has to do with maturity.

This is why I tend to avoid these threads, because within three posts it becomes "manga sucks" and then "no you just haven't read a lot of it let me recommend some stuff."

But going back to the original question(s) in the thread, Numbers, some manga do end. It's mostly the action genre that has ungodly runs that never end. The shounen (young boy) manga series, things like Dragon Ball and Naruto and all those things, they go on forever just because it's such a big market, and their popularity is so great that authors will keep tacking on more and more stuff to the point where it can drag on for years. A lot of manga could end reasonably but demand (also, money) means that authors will keep the series going. Akira Toriyama once said that Dragon Ball ended at the Cell saga for him, and everything else he did was filler because fans wanted it.

Also the art styles do differ but sometimes (most of the time) it's more subtle than picking out the differences in Western art. I know reading comics it's usually a lot easier to see the differences between artstyles, say for example the difference between Madureira and Ramos or Capullo and McFarlane. With manga unless the artist has a very distinct style, the principles of the art are very structured due to their culture (that is, having grown up viewing that artstyle with the big eyes and the tiny mouths and noses, etc.) so it's harder to tell the difference. But I mean you can pick out the wide differences between say Takahashi (Ranma) and Tite (Bleach) or Toriyama (DBZ) and Obata (Death Note).

Amen

Really I didn't know that, but it sure is a relief that he didn't intend for Gohan to get so gay during his teen years.
