I've been seeing trailers for this movie over the past week or so and I've gotta say I'm looking forward to it. I'm pretty much interested in any movie that involves modern warfare and this movie centers around Desert Storm.

I gotta say though, when the trailer shows the text, "Welcome to the suck" I get a kick out of it every time. Am I the only one that finds that mildly funny?

well, don;t expect too much action, unless they stray away from the book by a helluva lot, the only action the guy really saw was a couple of shellings

i am interested in the movie solely for the imagery of the burning oil fields in the desert

Burning oil-fields were the highlights in the trailer, probably will be in the movie. They looked awesome!

Movie looks great. Il be seeing it.

I don't expect a lot of action actually. I just find that most movies that I've seen centered around modern warfare are pretty good and this looks good too.

there's just something about those images that are so haunting, i remember when they were broadcasting the live stuff on TV during the war, and damn if it wasn't a creepy looking landscape

cant wait to see this. and yes, "welcome to the suck" always gets a giggle out of me.

Oh yes, I can't wait to see it. Sam Mendes is one of my favorite directors.

any of you not in the know, "welcome to the suck" means welcome to the corps... lots of marines call the corps the suck, ever since vietnam.

hopefully they don;t leave out all the stuff he did in the book, and presumably in real life, like when he pointed a loaded M-16 at one of his fellow Marines and talked about killing him until the guy broke down in tears - if they leave the stuff out like this they certainly won;t be portraying it all truthfully

Sometimes they have to cut stuff that they believe would be too extreme for theaters.

But after seeing Tigerland and Full Metal Jacket... or Apocalypse Now...

I wouldn't worry.

well, now I am slightly worried - seems they cut out most of the training and focus more on the war, though I guess it was going to be far too long with the training and it's already more than 2 hours... sigh
Mendes makes good movies though, so hopefully it all turns out well

I'm sure it will be a pretty amazing movie, lotsa good actors and based on a really intelligent and solid novel.

That was true in the cold war era, but now I believe all branches of service refer to Iraq as "the suck". I.e. "welcome the the suck" = "Welcome to Iraq" not "Welcome to the Marine Corps". Dunno but army friend calls Iraq "the suck".

"In Iraq the wind doesn't blow, it sucks."

Ahhh, that makes a lot more sense.

this out in the states yet? i look the look of it, saw the trailer today on film 2005 with jonathon ross...

anyone see it?

I saw it last night it was pretty good.

If your expecting a lot of action you'll be dissapointed, since there really isnt any.

But the movie itself, is good, and is really interesting. The training was fairly short, but not too bad.

And yes, the part where he almost kills the fellow marine is in it. And its done pretty well.

Would you say its like a "Platoon" for our Generation?
Sure, in same way they're both about the psychological effects of war on its soldiers, but it shoves clichés aside pretty quickly and is in a league of its own.

I watched it earlier today and I thought it was good. As long as you don't expect big war scenes or a Desert Storm version of Black Hawk Down or something.

i watched this movie and it started off giving a Full Metal Jacket type of feel but about half way through the movie...i dunno it kinda lost its edge.
i suppose it was trying to give a realistic portrayal of military life and it did do that but i dunno....just came out of the theatre speechless for whatever reason.

ive seen the trailer but i did not get it ... first it looked like a standard war-movie ... but they say its from the "american beauty" director or producer or something ... so it cant be a pro-war film.

what is it like ? anti-war ? not-judging ?

It's not really anti or pro anything...

I don't know, its hard to describe.

But I loved it. Every second of it. Well written, well acted...

You could even say its a coming of age film.
