Today Sun announced that Java will now be an open-source programming language :thumbs:

What will this mean in the long run?

More java features? More games coded in java? More support for java?

time will only tell. I'm excited as a java programmer that very soon people will have open access to modify the programming language to allow more features, better performance, and bugfixing on a wide scale.

Free != Open Source.

So does this mean Java will actually be somewhat fast?
As a C# programmer it would be nice to see Java have the speed of C# and possibly pointers handled like C#.

I would switch for Cross-Platform Development. However .NET does have mono which has already fully implemented .NET 1.1 for Linux, Mac, and Windows and as a developer you could write your own custom controls based off of System.Drawing to get full compatibilty on every OS via Mono. Also considering Microsofts helped out Mono a lot with specs and are now working with Novell(who is a major player behind Mono) I could see Microsoft really pushing .NET onto Mac and Linux via Novell to fight of an open source Java.
