So today I found out I am quite good with BF2 jets. Back in DC and BF:V I was decent with the planes, hit my mark some of the time and did well enough to kill maybe 2 or 3 people before I crashed or got shot down.

So today I was flying all the time to test out BF2 jets and how I'd do in them. I am surprisingly much better with these jets than in any previous BF title's planes. The bombing system is so simplified I don't get why everyone doesn't use it. That HUD makes things ultra precise. I also shot down a few enemy planes in one round without dying once that entire time.

So I guess I'll be a fighter pilot/bomber for HL2.NET whenever needed :].

Do you use a mouse or joystick?
Your flying looked very smooth, quite impressive.

Thanks :D. I use mouse and keyboard.

I'm gonna try flying with my joystick later when I get arsed to go get it and plug it into the back of my PC ;p

coolest thing about jets is the afterburner :)
I think the HUD is ;].

But the afterburner saved me many a times from missiles that my flares failed to save me from

Augh! I completely forgot about the after burner.

And I can't hit anything with the drop down bombs. how do you aim with those? I get the bottom of the vertical line on the target, is that right?

Yes but it also depends on your acceleration, elevation, and angle.

As with a lot of the air combat in BF2, it comes down to intuition.
After a while, you learn to control the planes/choppers instinctively, and the same applies to the weaponry.
Practice bombing - fly towards a nice target (the stationary aircraft on the carrier are good), and repeatedly attempt to bomb them. After a while, you'll get a feel for the right release point relative to your speed, elevation and angle.

So you can use the hud to gauge when to drop bombs? Does it have some sort of marker?

Whats the key for bomb drops and what planes carry them?

Both planes carry bombs, press F default key to switch from missiles to bombs.

When you've selected bombs, it's the bottom of the vertical line that indicates your target at time of release at ideal elevation, angle, and speed.

I can't fly jets because I am too used to flying helicopters. The controls are totally different. :P

I am pretty good with jets, I went like 5 rounds without being shot down, and shooting down lots of enemies. But I am much better infantry.

Is there a server where you often play at, Rakurai? I'm always looking to fight against good pilots. Usually at play at ReU Bong Hoot Hell, but it's been pretty empty lately. Used to get a lot of good pilots in there...anyway, maybe sometime we'll fly against eachother.

No particular server, just any decent one.

I can't use my joystick because when setting up controls it only detects me pressing my joystick buttons, and not any movement of the stick itself (IE to replace controls for movement like mouse axis one) Works in other games.

which vertical line are you talking about? the one that's usually covered by the plane?

When you have drop-down bomb selected, your crosshair is a vertical line.

press F9 and the nose of the plane will go away

aright, i just practiced an hour on an empty server and found im gettin pretty good.

one thing that helped me in getting the most bombing in the least amount of time is pressing the "change view key" right after the bombing.

first you switch to the behind view where you can see if you successfully took out your target.
then you quickly switch to fly-by mode to do one of those upside-down loop-dee-loop things to spiral back
this is also probably useful in avoiding missles
it took some practice but its really usefull

and for some reason im alot more accurate bombing with the plane with only 2 bombs

upside-down loop-dee-loops? Explain!

Something I found really useful for evading anything, and ending up behind an enemy jet, is just to take a 90 degree turn right up towards the sky, let loose on the engines, fall back down, and you're right behind the enemy that flew under you.

haha i never thought of that, pretty cool

after more testing though the loop dee loops arent that practical unless you're evading or showing off

what i meant by the upsidedown loop dee loop though is flying straight up, then kinda back unto where you came from, then doing a barrel roll so you're not upside-down
only problem is that it's really disorienting

It's not really disorientating if you keep a good eye on your horizontal lines, they are very helpful, especially when trying to hover with a chopper or VTOL

I almost always pull up so I am flying straight up then I hit f11 to look behind. Depending if they went straight or if they turned all the way I will either push forward or keep turning to get on their tail. Works pretty nice, unless they are a long ways away then when I fly straight up a few missles nail me.

BTW...it is next to impossible to hit someone when they are turning. If there is a plane behind you, dont stop turning.

Bombing is pretty easy, if your having trouble with it come in at a steeper angle, or get the MEC plane with 5 bombs, just start to drop them before the target, they drop in a long line so your bound to hit it, or something.

Also, the rutter is amazing, try turning to the side and then ruttering so you actually turn up, your enemy will think your about to turn but you actually go up. I tend to use the rutter a lot when flying, espcially in black hawks, I have gotten more kills flying a blackhawk then I do as infantry. I just tilt to the side and rutter opposite and my gunners have an awsome view of everything.

I'm doing the impossible, then? Damn I'm better than I thought. ;) I usually ALWAYS get people in the turns. Depends, of course, on my distance, the sharpness of the turn, and speed of the turn. More often than not, the pilot being chased will try and pull a tight afterburner turn so that they end up behind you. I just kill my speed a bit, turn with them so I'm always locked, and fire two missiles right up their aft.

Since this is a jet thread, I'm a n00b but how do you shoot that oil refinery that always gets targeted? Is it like the anti-air gun and you have to wait for a tone?

You don't. It's just a hot thing that can distract the heat seeking missles to your advantage. For example you can hover next to it in the Cobra and the stingers won't be able to hit you.
