John Romero on Source/Half-life 2/Portal

I think this was already posted, not sure though.

Romero was going to make you his bitch when Daikatana was released, but something went horribly wrong and he ended up becoming the bitch.

I'm willing to overlook Daikatana, since I do believe the guy has some talent. His ego's been crushed already. I'm sure that his new MMOG would have a far more level head behind it.

The reason behind Daikatana not being a great game is because:
1. John Romero could not find talented people; the game was developped when the mod communities weren't as big as today
2. The staff kept changing
3. He focused too much on the company itself; now he is returning to small studio work like in the id days
4. and the most wrong decision - conversion to Quake 2 engine. It differed a lot from Quake 1 under the hood, for example it did not use QuakeC game code but C - even though the QC scripts were pretty C-like, converting the code was a lot of work. This engine switch caused a significant delay and staff changes. If the game was released in 1997 like it was supposed to, it would have probably been great.

I hope John has more luck with his new project. He is looking for mappers, you know ;)

I don't mind Romero. Around the time of Daikatana my liking of the guy hit rock bottom, he had an ego, and that is what destroyed Daikatana. But I also believe Doom 3 wouldn't have been half as bad as it was if Romero had been on the team. He's a games designer, and that is what Doom 3 lacked.
