I have a question about the Software Development Kit for Half-Life 2.

As we have seen in some e-mails, Valve told us that they will release the SDK in the upcoming weeks/months, they also said that it probably will be released before the actual game.
And here comes my question, can you really use the SDK without having the game installed on your computer?

Thanks.

You will have a small "play room" (i dont have a better word for it) so you can test things out. Thats what I heard.

I dont think you need to compile it if you only want to test your levels or something.

(The cute squad attacks!)

Ah, thank you guys. :)

You could close this thread now if you want.

Naa I'll leave it open but move it to the coding area as its more their cup of tea.

It doesn't really belong here, more General Editing.. but still :)
Well editing, coding, compiling, just seemed like the best place for it. The guys who post in here know about compiling stuff.. Move it if you want though :)

I heard that if you compile it the right way, it gives you a secret password that you can use to access the Men-on-Sheep-on-Horses threesome porn sites.

I own those sites...

And I have a question: Since we know we can take HL maps and convert them for HL2, will we be able to play those old HL maps with the SDK?

We have no idea Ti

You don't really want to be converting tbh... will come out dodged imo

Why?

It's the same csg mapping format, all they'd have to do is extract the textures from the wads and put them into their own individual vmd files with the default HL materials settings, and convert brush sizes to the nearest whole unit so that the map would be roughly the same size and shape. With Hammer 4.0's leak prevention/spotting tools it should be hard to stitch any holes back up and retexture it...

A lot of entities would get screwed over, but I'm certain if the shipped compilers aren't smart enough to change every entity called "monster_headcrab" into a "npc_headcrab" then somebody will make one that is...
