When you turn your monitor off, does your video card cool down? Like does it shut off as well?

No, your graphics card remains running until you go into suspend/shut down.
Turning off the monitor will only make the monitor turn off :)

cuz i have a placeholder card in my current rig until the x800 xt pe gets here, its a 9800 pro and it has no fan, but a gigantic heatsink and it gets REALLY hot the heatsink. so i had my monitor off but i let my comp run all night and i just dont want the video card to melt.

So, open the case and put a fan next to it?

BTW, is there any chance at all that you'd be willing to donate the 9800 Pro to me? I'd love to repair it (ie. add a fan) and give it a good home (ie. my home :))

Anyway, graphics cards really don't emit a ton of heat when not playing games.. they stay generally cool while not using a graphically intensive app

Is it a stock heatsink? If it is, you need to get it replaced ASAP.

If it is one of those Zalman fanless heatsinks, it should be okay. I'm not a big fan of those type of heatsinks as they don't cool that well. If you want to be safe, spend $20 on a artic cooling VGA Silencer revision 3 replacement fan/cooler from newegg.com.

No when i mean a gigantic heatsink, i mean a GIGANTIC heatsink from thermaltake, its a heatsink that covers the whole card on both sides, and it used to have a little fan that never went on right, and it fell off and cut up some pins on my old soundcard (santa cruz) so i tossed it. im just curious because i have torrents up and they'll take about another 11 hours, and i dont wanna come home from work and see my video card melted all over the rest of my comp.

You'll be fine. VGA cards don't run that hot while the GPU is idle.

Anyhow, you know you want to donate that 9800 pro to me once you get your X800 :)

Well as long as the heatsink taking away the heat from the GPU, your video card should be fine. They design those heatsinks to work for extended periods of time so you should be perfectly fine. I'm just not a big fan of using them.

Anyways, it won't melt, it will burn.

lol sorry, my girlfriend is buying my old rig, so i gotta give the card too :-P otherwise yea i honestly would just give it to u. i find it funny my girlfriend who doesnt know shit about comps is getting a pretty sweet gaming rig.

I was so close! ..yet so far away
Oh well
/me attemps to delete this thread even though he's not a mod

those gigantic heatsinks are good.. they use conduction to cool down

Oh my god Guinny! I have the same heatsink! It's weird becuase my fan also broke! Mines runs like a charm still, but theres a cyclone blower right next to it as well as a side fan right by it too.
