People say that there wouldn’t be RahXephon without NGE (Neon Genesis Evangelion ) series, and I agree. RahXephon anime greatly influenced by NGE, but it is surpasses it in every way imaginable. From style, to animation, to music, to story-telling, to story itself, everything.
You see, NGE started out like any other mediocre anime (aka Full Metal Panic). But half way through, author went into depression, this why we see mambo jumbo philosophy in the end of NGE. Feels like it was written by teenager with full of angst, who hates the world and whines a lot about it. Plus series left A LOT of unanswered questions and never really tried to address them in the first place (just like last two Matrix movies).
RahXephon, on another hand, is what NGE should have been. You know, they both have jokes, comedic relief may I call it, but RahXephon never takes these jokes too far, knows when to stop. It feels like real world, because characters are much like real people. Plus RahXephon ALWAYS rewards careful viewer. If you watch these series carefully, you will see a lot of details that will answer a lot of questions by the end. NGE didn’t have it. Plus, RahXephon has a fantastic love story, that gives you big closure in the end, and main character is not a whining idiot. Also, this is first anime that made me cry. The last time I cried was during Saving Private Rayn movie (in the end, when Ryan asks his wife if he lived a good life). This is kind of anime, that will put a mental block on your head, so you won’t be able to see ANYTHING else until you finish story, and what a grateful ending. Good ending. Good philosophy. But I must warn you, if you are not paying attention, you won’t understand anything.
If you love anime, and if you like NGE, you MUST WATCH RahXephon, it’s a classic.
