just installed but cant actually play

i jsut installed half life 2 but when i click to play it, it brings me to the screen that says i have to purchase something extra just to play the game. I just payed 50 bucks for this disk, do i have to pay even more now.
How do i start up the game?

It might be downloading updates. Wait for that to finish.

If you bought the CD from someone else then you would need his CD key to assign it to your Steam login and if he already used the key then you're out of luck. Buy it retail or through steam.
