just installed but cant actually play

i just bought and installed HL2. I see it under my games in steam but it wont let me launch, it brings me to a purchase menu. I payed 50 bucks for the disks, do i have to pay even more now just to play. This is so goddamn annoying. Can i start hte game up without paying the 10 bucks on steam? BTW under status it says pre-loading done if that makes any difference.

You then bought it retail for 50 bucks?

And there shouldn't be anything on Steam asking you to pay an extra ten bucks, unless you're trying to play a game from the list that you don't actually own.

Buy the game for yourself then. Or get his entire Steam account - name / password etc. WITHOUT making 3 different threads about it.

I got his account but then when i hit launch the screen turns black like its going to load up the game and then just brings me back to the steam menu. Any ideas?

At any point were you asked to enter a serial number? You have to have a serial code for the game to work properly. There should be an option somewhere called "activate product on Steam" or something like that.

He shouldn't have to if he already got his friend's account details...

As for the game not starting up, I see from your other posts that you have CSS and HL2DM working...I dunno why HL2 wouldn't.

Email Steam and explain. They'll be cagey (I'd be, in their position) but if your story washes, they'll help. I bought HL2 on Ebay and was sent the seller's steam login but I lost it a year later. About 3 emails later Steam did me proud. Best of luck.
