Hey guys, I just switched over from my geforce to ATI.

I need some help from you ATI guys. Ive noticed there are ALOT of drivers out there for these cards. But people keep talking about how good th 4.4 drivers are and the 8.07 drivers are. I dont get it, the newest driver out from ati is the 4.12, how is it there are 8.07 and 4.4 they are higher that 4.12. . . .I dont get it.

Also if you guys can tell me what the best drivers are for my x800, let me know. Im not to pleased with the 4.12's from ATI if you have better ones that provide better fps, let me know.

Also, can one of you tell me how to uninstall my current drivers?

Thanx

I'd recommend the Omega drivers (check out guru3D), but some people have reservations about them: some quality sacrifices for speed, etc - and you shouldn;t need to make any such sacrifices!!

Try the 4.12 Catalyst drivers to start and see how they run... I need to use the Omega drivers to play mine at 1024x768 with all the detail cranked up.

haha! quite funny how you switched and need help straight away. says something about ati i fink.

6800gt all the way

Used to be nVidia all the way: once 3D cards were integrated into the main graphics cards (TNT onwards) - I had the first Asus V3400TNT in the UK... then a GeForce DDR (which blew up - no OC'ing), GeForce 2 (which blew up - no OC'ing), GeForce 2 Ultra which was so unstable I couldn't use it, despite it working fine in some machines, it didn't like my dual P3.... My GeForce3ti500 was pretty nice, but was v happy when I switched to a Radeon 9700PRO... it'll take a lot to get me to switch back again.

Look, he needs help on his new card, not criticism on his new purchase.

Well, cleaning out your drivers can be done with a program called driver cleaner. Don't remember where I found it though, I think guru3D has it.

I would stick with 4.12's. The omegas are a little funky and are a third party driver. When I tried to use them, I followed omegas instructions CLEARLY when installing the drivers. The card began to act like it was using Windows drivers. I was getting "FPS" drops just trieing to visit the newgrounds front page! I reinstalled catalyst and low and behold, everything was fine.

I'd normally advise people steer clear of 3rd party drivers and stick to the Catalyst ones.... but people with "lower end" cards like my 9700pro ;) have to resort to dirty tricks to get the all the eye candy at a "decent" res.

TBH I think it's my CPU slowing things down - I was testing it back at stock 2500+ speeds and it was flat-out at 100%, pretty much the entire time... I'll get it back up to 3000+ speeds and see where we go.... failing that I could always try OC'ing a bit more and invite the inevitable fireworks.... followed by a call to Scan/Komplett/eBuyer for a Socket939 and a A64 CPU :D

Perhaps there was a problem with heat in your pc...

use the 4.12 with control center unless you have problems. The Omega drivers can be better if your willing to take more of a risk seeing as they are not from ATI (not saying they are bad). You can just go to the add/remove programs menu to uninstall the drivers but I would reccomend using a program called drivercleaner to make sure you remove everything (i dont have the link though)

I would stick to the 4.12 drivers... you might also want to try ATI tool also as it has some nifty tweaking options and is able to show your GPU temperature in the systray. Its designed initially for the overclocker but its still usefull even if you dont plan to overclock.

Yea, he isn't used to this amount of support and drivers.

Your spelling also says a lot...

Pressure - LOL - agreed! When you hit probs on nVidia cards you're on your own a lot of the time.... with ATI, there seems to be a lot more informal support and well tested 3rd party solutions to probs - probably from a few years back when the Radeon driver support used to be so thin....

I FINK your a moron. Its odd that in the benchmarks the ati 800 PRO sometimes beat the high-end geforce. I also wasnt looking forward to putting a generator in my room just to run the card.

Thanx for the help guys, I installed the omega drivers. They seem to be running fine, they also come with a neat overclocking tool

;) It's also odd that in some of the 'benchmarks' the Geforce 6800 GT beats the x800 XT.

 These new generation of cards are well equal, face it. You tools.

ailevation. . . .I actually think im going to go back to geforce. I have a problem though, new egg says it can only be returned for the same make and model. Can I still get a refund?

I think im going to go with the evga 6800 GT, would this be a wise decision? I have a 480 watt psu

:O Hmmm. I don't really know about the return policy, the Geforce 6800 GT and x800 Pro have basically the same value. Performance wise, i'd say the GT has a little bit of an upper hand, with the more pipelines and all as well... but then again there's the x800 XL, but that's for PCI-Express. You've got nothing to lose though with either.

im sorry, i was just letting off steam cos i AM a moron. looks like ive stirrd up the nvid vs. ati debate.

ill just say this- i am very pleased with my 6800gt, but was literally 2 minutes off buying an x800 pro, so i dont really have any credibility do I?

And the spelling? it was deliberate. but im sure you know that

I am a fan of both ATi and nVidia, but this guy needs help. The fact that some people like nVidia over Ati and vise versa isn't the point, these threads always end up going this way. Try the 4.12 drivers and see how you get on, if you have any probs, try 4.11 and then wait for Ati to release 4.13 drivers which should be out in teh first half of this month (January)

That should be plenty of power, many sites have run the GeForce6800's on less for extended periods of time and there were no problems. As far as returning it and exchanging it, I believe store credit can be issued.

I have had reservations myself about getting an ATI card as it does seem to require extra tweaking to get it to work. I prefer plug and play which is how all my Geforce cards have been. I would be happy with an X800 or a 6800 tho,

Sorry for bringing up an old topic, Id just like to say thanx to all that have helped. I ended up going with the geforce 6800 ultra LoL I found it it needs a 480 watt psu so I bought one.

I only have a 3200xp processor though, so I wont see the power of the card till I upgrade to 64 bit this march, If anyone is interested in a 3200xp processor , nf7-s mobo, and 512 ram. Let me know

6800GT's only require a 300watt as specified by Nvidia, its the Ultra's that ideally require a 480watt, so you should'nt have any problems with the GT.
Just check you have a suitable Amp rate on your 12v+ rail, it will say so on the label on the psu.
Anything above 30A is good for a modern PC.
