Just purchased KOTOR?

So, while just a tad belated, I just bought KOTOR off of Steam. But, I'm wondering if the story will keep me interested in the 20+ hours it will take me to complete the game. How does the story/characters hold up to Bioware's recent (or semi-recent) releases? (ME1/2, Dragon Age, Jade Empire, etc).

Kotor is probably Bioware's prime achievement. The rest of their games are modeled off of it. Quite literally.

You'll find you recognize segments that are exactly the same as some parts in future games. They figured out Kotor was a winning mixture and tried to keep it that way.

edit: it's worth noting Kotor and Kotor2 are in my top 10 list of favorite games

I think the story is interesting, but I couldn't get past the first world. I just wanted to leave the ****ing planet and instead something would come up about how I had to do some shit and ****KK I got bored.

I also think that type of gameplay is boring. This thread reminds me I should give it another go.

Basically what Acepilot said. You will find quite a few similarities between KOTOR and their other games in terms of dialogue structure, characters, inventory and combat.

Also, the story is top notch.

You made a great purchase.
It's one of the best Star Wars games ever made.

Pretty much the best game I have ever played.

It'll keep you interested, but ZT has a fair point: the Taris part took waaaaay too long. If you can get past that point without getting bored, you're good to go.

I personally really liked Taris, but then again, before KOTOR I had never really played any other RPGs.

Appreciate the comments, damn I wish this would d/l faster.

KOTOR and KOTOR 2 are awesome games. I'm sure you'll like them.

>Reminding me of more games I never finished.

Fuuuuuck and I just got done downloading Deus Ex.

h8 u guyz :(

Does anyone know the best class to play in this game? I always chose Scout and found it awkward.

I also liked kotor too,it was nice to see something stars wars based that was soo good

I just "rescued" an important individual (don't want to get too spoilery). The story seems to be picking up. Also, the music seems to give off a "Morrowind" vibe, anyone else get that?

Soldier and then go consular.

Dude the game has been out for years we all know who Bastila is

I really need to play this game so I shall download it off steam. I knew there was an epic game I needed to play lol.

It's too late to say inb4 taviow so I don't really have anything to say. But here I am saying it.

Edit: Is Kotor 2 on Steam now? When did that happen?

Edit: For some reason I thought this thread was about Kotor 2. Kotor is excellent, despite its flaws.

Since this is a KOTOR thread... what's happening these days with the KOTOR II Restoration Project? The unfinished bits are on an ugly scar on an otherwise great game:(

I dislike the combat in this game, are you sure scoundrel isn't a better option?

The game is a direct copy of the d20 system, only in pseudo-real time. If you know anything about DnD building multi-class characters(forced in Kotor) is about tweaking them out.

The few levels of soldier before you become a jedi will make durable enough to take some combat, and then the rest on consular will make you a force-power BEAST.

Consular is better in Kotor2, since you get the prestige classes jedi master and sith lord, but it's nothing to scoff at in 1 too.

gizka is basically done for and they don't even care, another team already released a finished-ish patch

Most might, just didn't want to ruin anything for someone who hasn't played it/doesn't know much about it. I suppose it would be hard to, considering even I know the "big twist."

KOTOR is good, but if there's a Truly Good Reason to play it, it's really just to get to this salaciously-good babe:

Superior to its predecessor by all accounts, this game is one of my favourite of - it always gives me a kick saying this, it's so silly - "all time".

Ooo, and the competition is stiff.

I can't say if it gets any better the further you go, but a friend tried Scout and said it was pretty horrible. The main advantage to the class is the stealth ability, but the game actually renders it useless at many points since you can't trigger it in combat, and you often have no warning when it's about to begin. Even worse are boss fights, which make it impossible to use by shoving a cut scene right in front of combat.

Could be wrong, being a second hand account, but it looked pretty awkward whenever I was watching him play.

Hey, I liked this game... to a point. :(

I just gave Scoundrel a try. Which is basically all stealth. I don't know if I made a horrible decision, but so far it's a pretty smooth ride.

Hack and slash with a lightsaber. Yes, it's moderately fun, but it's still kind of shit. I suppose the cheat with the games I listed is that they're all prequel based.

My favourite next to KOTOR II:

A shame its sequel tanked.

Kotor 2 was great.. except for the mining station and Nar Shaadaa.

What about the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight, Empire at War, Battlefront, Galactic Battlegrounds, Podracer, Republic Commando, and the Rogue Squadron series?

Sure, the franchise has its fair share of stinkers but the good definitely outweighs the bad.

Man, I never even beat KOTR. Didn't even get that far in it. And I didn't play the second one either of course.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME!

Most games I haven't played through.

What about TIE FIGHTER.

YOU BLASPHEMER.

GOD.

Only mentioned what I played.

I don't do space sims.

Also, what the hell? How can you actually say Jedi Outcast sucked? Surely you must be referring to the abysmal Jedi Academy?(though the multiplayer was significantly improved)

but Academy was goooood

I don't know why the **** everyone hates on Academy. It was fun, and it let me throw and slice stormtroopers immediately without the usual mandatory 5 levels of standard nothing but shooting gameplay.

I don't want to read anything here but I do want to say... wtf is with KOTOR 2 not being on Steam? I can't find it and I want it.

Jedi Outcast AND Academy were both brilliant. Its stupid saying the latter was bad, it basically improved on all the (limited) flaws of the first one. I too have purchased KOTOR off steam, time to see what all the fuss is about.

looool. In what sense is it "stupid" saying Outcast was bad? Surely it's far closer to the truth to say calling Outcast brilliant is stupid? Well, whatever Trevor! Outcast improved certain elements, such as the combat, but it didn't in any way compose itself as well. It's a much lesser game, and certainly more of a mainstream product.

Those are hardly stellar titles, and I assure that the bad does outweigh the good.
