"just say no" Vista policy

Meanwhile all major OEM manufacturers including HP and Dell are going to provide you a cd that will allow you to downgrade from Vista to XP after Microsoft stops selling XP. I can't believe Microsoft could screw up at this kind of level. Many argue that Windows ME was in a similar position but back then you at least had a choice to go with win 2k instead, here you have no other choice.

I don't despise Vista like Windows ME. Vista's issues are not crashes and OS instability but mainly regarding other company's drivers and their compatibility with Vista. One is a terrible job at an OS (WinME) and the other is an OK OS but a miss-step with the market (Vista).

Yeah, I think it's pretty funny that MS made that downgrade to XP available since it goes directly against their adoption of Vista. Oh well. Better for the consumer and choice.

I don't intend on buying Vista.

I like XP fine enough, and I'm not impressed enough with what Vista offers to make the switch.

I'm waiting on the next OS.

I've heard a lot of bad thing about vista from people who dont use it. And a lot of good things from people who do use it ( and they arent general users ). I have yet to use it, so I will hold my comments until i give it a try ( will be installing it this weekend )

I've had Vista for a few months now. I like it but I wouldn't bother getting it if you already have XP, I got mine for my new PC. At the same time I don't see the point of downgrading from Vista to XP. I think Vista got a bad rep after launch which just hasn't gone away, even though many of it's issues, like lack of driver support are all but dead.

Vista = Eye Candy and little more
Windows XP = <3

I love XP and have no plans to change it as far as the eye can see. Unfortunately it does bug out some times. I sometimes crash explorer.exe and have to restart it. I've had this install of XP for like a year and have 100's of apps installed though, and leave my computer tasking 24-7, so it's understandable I guess.

I only used Vista for a couple hours, but after that hair pulling experience, I'm not really interested in anything new MS does, until they give me a reason to. God damn that thing is slow. In my opinion, a 'better' operating system should be faster and easier to use, but it seems it was very much the opposite.

My Uni is moving from ME to XP and Vista (mostly Vista) over the summer holidays...oh joy. And chaos will ensue.

So they're hoping that the next version of Windows doesn't require better hardware than XP or Vista and that it'll have perfect compatibilty right from launch?

Sounds a bit optimistic.

I tried vista for awhile, but I couldnt install any ****ing games on it. It kept giving me this same error on like 5 different games. I promptly uninstalled and went back to XP.

Still no problems as of yet on Vista for me.

BTW, I'm running Vista Ultimate connected to a corporate domain via a VPN. I'm using a SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum. I can run Steam games fine, though I haven't really tried with many others.

Every game I've installed, new and old, runs fine :S
Was it on a trial? Seems like a massive waste of money to buy it and then not use it.

Try using a legal version. :p

The few games I installed for people on Vista worked fine with no issues.

The only game i couldn't get to work on Vista was Fahrenheit, because it kept saying the installation was interrupted. Apart from that all my games have installed and worked fine.

I'm betting the companies are thinking of sticking with XP simply because it works for them. Not to wait for Windows 7. I mean, they will check it out when MS lets them try the new OS but I doubt they have any expectations of Windows 7.

I have Vista, don't really see where all the hatred against it comes from. I also have nothing against XP, before any senseless, brand-loyal fanboys jump at me.

For me, aesthetics is important and Vista delivers on that front. Also the search bar in the Start menu is f***ing fantastic. Every time I use XP it feels so clumsy when I have to look around for programs/files etc.

I'm very aware that my experience is totally subjective, and some of you may have totally valid reasons not to want to use the OS, but I personally like Vista, and wouldn't want to go back to XP.

ya know, i've never really put two and two together in terms of why my PC freezes sometimes when launching vista...always thought it was something i did...hmmm

****considers getting XP again****

I have nothing against Vista personally. It's just that XP delivers what I want just fine with no hassle. DX10 is the only reason why I'd even consider jumping to Vista, but seeing how I don't currently have DX10 hardware, I don't see the point. :P

Most people who do like Vista though seems to be purely for aesthetic reasons.

I personally don't care how pretty the GUI is as long as it doesn't swab up tons of processes and RAM in the process. I perfer performance over aesthetics tbh.
This way I can have aesthetically pleasing games while having great performance at the same time.

P.S. No offense GreatBlackthorn. To each his own I suppose. :D

You can get themes for XP that make it look very similar to Vista.

And if you take charge of your computer you can make finding your programs and files a lot easier without a search.

Windows 7 will be out in another year or two, so I don't see a reason for getting Vista now anyway.

Why do people think Windows 7 will be any better? :P
Especially at launch.

By the time Windows 7 comes out Vista will probably be stable and 7 will be in the same position Vista was at launch.

Is there a reason other than $ that MS keep releasing new OS'? I mean, they have the internet to distribute service packs now this isn't the days of 3.1

Yup, QFE. I can't count how many times I've sat down in front of a friend's PC and felt the same feeling you might get from walking into a room with faeces smeared on the floor, furniture thrown around, and a thousand books scattered all over the place.

What is everyone's problem with UAC, i've left it on and it hardly asks me anything. It's not nearly as annoying as some people make it out to be.

Strange. It kept asking for my permission for almost anything. :\

Vista=epic fail

I really can't stand it, nor the fact that Microsoft is pushing it so hard when it's apparent that everybody hates it.

same here. In fact I don't use wallpaper, just a plain grey background, and don't even use XP themes. I use a custom 'classic' style theme I made. It's fast as balls and very low memory. My brother said I'm a minimalist. I just want shit to work, and as fast as possible. I can worry about beauty when I look at images or play games. Besides, in some ways, I find the Vista themes really ugly and annoying.

You know, having a wallpaper doesn't really slow down your computer much if at all. There's a difference between being a minimalist, and living dull when you don't have to.

After you play a memory intensive game (aka anything these days), the lack of a wallpaper means instantly responsive desktop. It's worth it, IMO.
