Just sent this email to Valve-read/comments

To the appropiate party at Valve. Guess at this point I would like a programmer to look at my system specs to see why the game is crashing after only a few minutes of game play. I get the following error can not load instruction 0x241f8977 referenced memory at 0x01c9fco memory can not be read. I HAVE GONE THROUGH TECH SUPPORT BY PHONE AND HAVE CHANGED ALL SETTING THEY ASKED ME TO WITH NO RESULTS. I WANT THIS TO BE LOOKED AT BY A PROGRAMMER OF THE GAME. HAVE HAD THE GAME 2 WEEKS AND HAVE NOT HAD A GOOD EXPERIENCE. The dxdiag I am sending to be looked at is my computer at the regular settings I started with before I played the game. Things I have done include: changed mem value in boot ini., changed sound acceleration to lowest setting, reinstalled the game etc.... please look at my file and what tech support has told me to do before sending me more suggestions.....
1) VERY IMPORTANT GO TO HALFLIFE2.NET AND UNDER STEAM AND HALF LIFE 2 SUPPORT- THIS MEM ERROR HAS BEEN HAD BY MANY PEOPLE. I THINK THE PROGRAMMERS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DO A SOLUTION AS IN PATCHING TO ALLOW ALOT MORE TO PLAY THE GAME.
2) WITH THIS MANY PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM IT SHOWS THE GAME WAS PUSHED OUT THE DOOR TO EARLIER JUST BECAUSE OF THE HOLIDAY, IT IS REALLY NOT FAIR FOR THE CONSUMER TO PLAY A GAME THAT CAN NOT BE PLAYED RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX.
3) BEFORE YOU TAKE EXCEPTION TO #2 I HAVE JUST BOUGHT 12 GAMES IN THE LAST MONTH AND WHILE SOME HAD BUGS(NO WAY TO AVOID BECAUSE OF SO MANY SYSTEMS OUT THERE) AT LEAST THEY ARE PLAYABLE.
4) I AM ASKING FOR HELP. AND UNFORTUNATELY WHILE I AGREE WITH REVIEWERS THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES OUT THERE(PHYSICS ENGINE). I WANT TO HAVE THE SAME IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE AS MANY OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE GAME.
5) ONE MORE THING, PLEASE READ THESE MESSAGE BOARDS, BESIDES GETTING FEEDBACK, YOU WILL LEARN THE COMPANY HAS MADE A VERY BIG MISTAKE-STEAM. ALL THE GAMERS OUT HERE AGREE THE COMPANY SHOULD PROTECT THEFT OF THEIR GAME BUT THIS WAS NOT THE WAY TO GO. DAY 1 WHEN YOU COULD REGISTER THE GAME, NOT ENOUGH SERVERS TO HANDLE THE REGISTRATION, MANY PEOPLE HAD THE GAME SIT AROUND UNABLE TO BE PLAYED. HAVE TO REGISTER TO PLAY SINGLE-PLAYER????? THEN STEAM HAS TO DECRYPT FILES TO PLAY THE GAME???? CAN NOT BE UNINSTALLED FROM ONE'S SYSTEM-ERROR1306?????NOW WE HAVE TO HAVE IT ON OUR SYSTEM. MANY PEOPLE UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS. :angry:

I'm considering calling them up and requesting a manual. Since they didn't send me one, I couldn't even figure out how to disconnect from a server in CS, let alone quit.

1. I'm am VERY sure that valve know of the issue already and already have programmers making a patch of some sort.
2. Writing in CAPS makes you look retarded. I'm sure I'm not the only person who thinks this.
3. I doubt very much a programmer will read your email, probably just an "oh, another email about that damn memory error came through" will be said to the programming team.
4. Excessive question marks also makes you look retarded. Again, I doubt I'm the only person who thinks this.
5. 9 times out of 10 when tech support can't fix a problem, fan forums usually can.

I wouldn't even read it, just like I wouldn't listen to someone yelling at me (cause that's really all you're doing). Did you even supply your computer specs or anything useful to getting the problem solved? Or was that it (the dxdiag report)?

I am supposing you two had no problem playing the game, but many are and if you were in my situation you would feel the same. I am not posting this to fight with anyone but I truly want to play the game and have worked with tech support to no avail. I wanted thenm to read the forum to show alot of people are having the same problem. It is not fair to push a product out the door with such a game stopper. In response to writing in capitals,are you kidding me, it was done to be retarded but to show the angry of trying to get the game to work for two weeks more than 5 minutes at a time. I am angry and have a right to be. Between me and alot of others not being able to play the game and that awful steam idea, I want the company to acknowledge the problem and tell us the programmers are trying to fix and they will let us gamers know asap when a patch will correct this.

Hate to break it to you, but every single release of a computer game for as long back as I remember has had customers that couldn't play. I've been one of them, and the only solution I had was to return the game since tech support was a couple morons repeating the phrase, "update drivers, update drivers".

Why does everybody wanna play this game so desperately? It's an OK game but nothing special, just return it if it doesnt work and buy it again in several months when it's collecting dust on the discount shelf...

Actually, I don't even have the game yet, I have to wait til Christmas, and there's no guarentee that it'll even work then.

But I DO know that people don't like being yelled at. Even if you're pissed off, Valve is working as fast as they can and your yelling hasn't been helping. Look at how many patches have come out in the first week and try honestly telling me that Valve hasn't been trying to fix things.

This game is one of the most vid-card supporting games, supporting graphics cards ranging from DX7 to DX9 compatible, using each to its fullest. I don't think I've ever seen a game which automatically detects what features you can use (AA, reflection, bump mapping, etc.) and enables them in game accordingly to give you maximum effect. With that range and complexity, I'm not surprised to see bugs.

Just be patient and you'll eventually be able to play. Yelling at Valve won't solve anything.

I think you should ditch the caps, fix the grammar and spelling and lighten up on the drama.

While I can understand your situation. (My game is one of the stutter bug victims STILL) You cannot get through to people this way.

Whenever trying to get a problem solved you should offer up a solution as well. People who feel less criticized are more eager to help out.

I believe you did but make sure to send them your PC specs, your driver versions, screens of the errors (If any), any pertinent log files. Attempt to recreate the issue several times and document your process and what triggers the crash.

FYI Programmer is not an entirely correct title You would like a developer to address your issues.

Same here. But loose the caps lock. I don't think that will go down to well. Agree though that this problem appears to be far greater than Valve are letting on. you only have to look around the various HL2 forums (Not least the Steam forum) to see that this is a huge problem.

What should be a great experience for some of us turns out to be a PITA
after paying good money for essentially a faulty product.
