"The survey of 112,003 students finds that 36% believe newspapers should get "government approval" of stories before publishing; 51% say they should be able to publish freely; 13% have no opinion."

"Asked whether the press enjoys "too much freedom," not enough or about the right amount, 32% say "too much," and 37% say it has the right amount. Ten percent say it has too little."

no prob., anyway, do you think teachers should do better job of explaining principels of democracy or student are to blame themselves?

both are to blame ...most adults (not just kids) are dangerously ignorant of politics in general

How many of those students read the newspaper? How many of them have taken any course related to politics in high school? In my English class a really buff black guy (who took "performance enhancers") did a report on how the newspaper is giving a bad rep to professional athletes and getting too into their private life. In some ways, newspapers do get a little too personal, and this poll doesn't relfect what those people meant by any of that, and therefor this poll means nothing.

all, that poll does is shows us that a lot of hs students simply don't understand what democracy is all about, simple as square

it scares me a little, i mean country full of people who don't understand the simple ideas of our fathers, is doomed to be lead by a power hungry leader who will destroy US

Some of them probably don't know what government approval would mean, but that is just because they are young. Honestly though, I don't know a single person who votes and is this dumb, do you?

yes, there are dumb voters, and high school seniors are not all that young anymore, i mean i would expect them to be a little bit more understanding of simple democracy

I was asking you if you know anyone who votes that is that dumb. I don't know any who lacks that much commen sense, and still votes.

ok, let's not use dumb, instead use uneducated, second, yes there a whole bunch of uneducated voters,
most of the south voted of Bush because he is a taugh mother-trucker from Taxes, that's the politics they know

"In the U.S.A. 40-44 million (21-23% of adults) are functionally illiterate. Among young adults, illiteracy is increasing. "

sad

That is another odd statistic, I don't know a single person who is illiterate, I have never even heard of anyone over 10 years old that is illiterate.

"functionally illiterate" foxtrot:

1. having reading and writing skills insufficient for ordinary practical needs

That would have to be defined further, because they can be an incredibly broad range of reading and writing skills.

My mom voted for Bush cuz he's "cute" and didn't like kerry because he was "gross" ^_^
Does that count?

Wasn't there a study that showed 11% of Americans couldnt find america on a world map?

I think there was a study, and it was college students. But seriously, do you know a single person who can't find the US on a world map? Also, my mom voted for Kerry because Bush was "An asshole." and he was "stupid" hell, most people I know don't like Bush because he is "Stupid". They got this reliable information off the shirt of the week, and that guys bumper sticker.

The media should not be censored, but i really don't like how much "freedom" the media has. I mean, last night on the news this guy tumbles out of his burning house and he stands up. The reported delivering the story turns his head, sees the guyand runs to him, sticks the microphone in his face and yells, "sir, sir, your house is burning down, how do you feel?"

Also i dont think reporters should be on the front lines in a combat zone, especially not with those huge cameras. As i recall a reporter was shot on the front becuase he was holding a camera and the soldier thought it was a bazooka.

well, without free press, there is no free nation

True, but i find it unsenstive how far the media takes its "freedom."
