Right, how do I go about disabling the sounds in Windows XP? You know, the annoying startup/shutdown sounds?
I'll seriously damage something if I don't figure out how to turn them off again.

control panel > sounds and audio devices > sounds tab.

there you can change and remove and of windows sound effects

Start button -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sound Tab -> Sound Scheme Option and select "No Sounds"
