Killing NPC's in HL2

Pretty much the only npc you can kill on the friendly side is Lamaar:sniper:, and yet you cant kill the other ones except while doing something stupid with a certain object it flies and kills the npc. What gives?

Because if you could accidentally kill say Kleiner, it would be impossible to proceed through the game, since the game needs all NPCs there to play the scenes correctly.

There were problems with accidently killing rebels. Sometimes a rebel may wander in front of you as you shoot an AR2 orb, or you might accidently kill one with an automatic gun while turning around. Another huge problem was accidentally running over the rebel at the end of Highway 17 who waves you down and tells you to park your buggy in the garage, which ended the game instantly and pissed off a lot of playtesters. Eventually Valve decided to take the easy way out and just remove friendly fire.

IIRC, I always come to a shuddering halt whenever I come into contact with a friendly in mah buggy.

It also wouldn't make sense story-wise unless they had a big fat "mission failed" screen every time a rebel wandered into your line of fire, which would be pretty annoying. In HL1 all the guards and scientists were isolated from each other so they wouldn't know if you had killed any of their comrades. In HL2 the rebels wouldn't be so eager to fight by your side if you just ran around slaughtering them.

if you cheat yourself weapons in kleiner's lab the first time, you can kill her. I dunno about the other times you see her, though.

Headcrabs have no gender, unless you count Big Mamma (which i don't. )
