Where did this knock come from? Its been a "secret knock" since forever. But where is it from? How is it so universally known? When I was a little kid my family used to do it all the time, and apparently so did everybody else's family.

Its baffled me all my life. Its gotta be from a super famous song or something.

For those who have no idea what I am talking about, watch this video. The knock he does after the 1 minute mark is what I am talking about.

He names it. He calls it "A Shave and a Haircut". Maybe that'll help you.

It is kind of scary to think about the fact that when I or anyone in my family hears that knock on our door... we immediately think, "Hey, it's family" when in fact it could be anybody, because everybody uses it!

The Shave and a Haircut Murderer!

argh william why you postin in my account FOO

I can't believe none of you make that association. Must be an American thing. Either that or I blame Roger Rabbit as well.

BTW I read the title of this thread as increasingly impatient knocking (didn't notice the punctuation for spacing)

I only ever knew it as a knock.

You people are freaks.

Who doesn't know about this knock? If you don't know the secret knock, you are a terrorist.
Former Prisoner of War and U.S. Naval Seaman Doug Hegdahl reports fellow American captives in the Vietnam war would authenticate a new prisoner's American identity by tapping the first 5 notes of "Shave and a Haircut," against a cell wall, waiting for the appropriate response. American POW's were then able to communicate securely with one another via the quadratic alphabet code.[2]

When I read the thread title I thought of Blast Pit.

I've known the secret knock for 30 years. It has been passed down from generation to generation. Like carrying on the torch.

It was single-handedly responsible for cracking Nazi Germany's seemingly uncrackable Enigma coding device. Also discovering aliens.

I, have a real small, pe-NIS!

oh god, even knocking on doors can make fun of me...

Anyone caught making a 'knock knock' joke henceforth, will be beaten, raped and dismembered - not necessarily in that order.

it's Shave and a Haircut: two bits ..it's a song:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shave_and_a_Haircut

Shave and a Haircut, and the associated response, "two bits", is a simple (7 or 8 note) musical couplet sometimes used at the end of a musical performance

Certainly not a knock knock joke

a guy wearing a hoodie and a fat guy ......ok

You apparently didn't even watch the video you posted.

And your lack of knowledge of an Abu Gharaib photo surprises me... since you probably posted the same photo at least 2 dozen times.

I don't know why I made the image. He just reminded me of Lynndie England for some reason, and with his shirt he looks like the brown ones the military soldiers wear.

I rarely watch the videos I post because I CANT; I'll usually watch them when I get home. and for the record I did watch it right up to the point where it did the shave and a haircut with the train horn

still dont know what this has to do with abu ghraib and a fat guy

It doesn't! It has absolutely zero to do with your video!

I simply saw him giving a thumbs up and at that moment he reminded me of Lynndie England.

I didn't say it made logical sense!

You're so funny sometimes Stern.

The guy jumping into the frame to give that serious-faced silent thumbs-up was ridiculous.
