I have about $25 and I could buy a used copy of KotOR 2, but I was wondering, do I need to beat KotOR 1 in order to get the story to KotOR 2? I was reading the story on EBgames.com, and it just seems like the story is where the Revenge of the Sith movie left off (Not literally, just the general tone of the story...)...

I want to play #2 because it probably has better everything... but I don't want to get a screwed up story..

And one more thing, how open ended is this game? Is it like Oblivion (Character creation and inventory and stuff, a do what ever you want game - no linear-ness, doesn't make you follow a "Path") or is it like Deus Ex 1 (Character creation and inventory and all that, but it's sort of Linear, makes you follow a sort of "Path")

Ugh...

As much as I love KOTOR 2 more than KOTOR 1, its best to play KOTOR 1 first so yeah, you'll want to get KOTOR 1 so you can understand the story better.

Well, it's not so much as understanding the story "better", I mean: Will I be COMPLETLY AND UTTERLY LOST if I don't play #1?

Or will I understand some parts, but other parts I won't understand as much..

I only played KOTOR 2 and I wasn't lost. D:

I think for better enjoyment of the plot and characters in both games, you should play KOTOR 1 first. They're both like $10-$20 bucks now (well...more so for Canada I guess).

Meh, you could play 2 and get it. They mention like, two characters from the first game at the very end, and maybe one plot twist (which ended up not having much to di with the second game at all, iirc) So, no, get 2. And if you really want to know the story, look it up on the internet. I could probably remember it and tell you, if you wanted.

I personally thought 1 was a better game, but I never finished 2. But Star Wars is a fairly casual sort of gaming thing - it's not D&D, really - so it should be possible to jump straight into 2.

You should definitely play KOTOR 1 first, not only because it will help greatly with the plot but because it's a better game and has a much better plot.

KOTOR 2 is 10x the game KOTOR 1 is.

Sorry Samon I disagee with you there as much as I love it the story seems rto make little sense in some places. I like both, scratch that, I love both games but KOTOR 1 sets up the story for KOTOr 2 and was so much better. That restpratin project is really helpful, saves ypu from having to pick up the places.

If you want an over-all better story, get KOTOR1.

If you want slightly better graphics, powers, and skills and a good story up until near the end and tons of plot holes... get KOTOR2.

So pretty much if you don't care for a story, get KOTOR2.

Personally I enjoyed KOTOR1 alot more than KOTOR2, just the whole building up your character to be a light-saber wielder.
Then making decisions that affect your balance between light & dark.

Fun stuff.

I thought KOTOR 2 had the far superior story. KOTOR 1's little 'twist' is really quite overrated - you could see it coming a mile off. KOTOR 2 is so much darker.

Kotor 2 had more potential than the first game, but it ended up being a sad, amputated creature.

I like them both, but Kotor 1 is the better game simply because it actually felt finished.

I have played both. I think you should definitly get both. But you won't be completely lost without it. You won't miss any major story details, just minor things for people who played the first one.

Playing Kotor 2 first could also retroactively spoil the main twist from the first game.

Not sure about that, I don't remember any major references that could spoil it. What's more likely to spoil it however, is the fact that everyone's mentioning a "major spoiler" which in turn will have him actively look for it. I had a friend who told me "holy shit it's got a great twist!" and when I played it through I kept thinking "hm... is this the twist?". Eventually I figured it out before it was revealed and felt kind of disappointed, it would've been a much better feeling if I had not known there was a twist to begin with.

Including what DeusExMachina just said.

...PARADOX!!!!!!

KoToR 1 had the better story, KoToR 2 had more to do but the ending was shite

Your friend sounds like a great guy :smoking:

And to all these people saying KOTOR 2 is better ... what gives? How is it better? The gameplay remains almost exactly the same, except with worse pacing. The story isn't anywhere near as good and has far inferior characters, in addition to a bunch of plotholes.

Why is it better?

Uh KOTOR 2's story is far more original and deeper than KOTOR 1. It isn't some "lol, i'm a awesome powerful super jedi who's gonna SAVE TEH GALAXY!" The characters weren't presented as well because Obsidian had to cut out a lot because LucasArts wanted the game out that winter. KOTOR 2 introduced the philosophy behind the Star Wars universe and showed that everything isn't black and white. The overall plot was far better than KOTOR 1.

Damnit.. I can't get the game now anyways... I went to EB games, and they said they had a used copy for XBOX and not PC.. and they don't have any new ones - the game is discontinued... damnit damnit damnit I wanted to play it sooo damn bad!

I had Diablo 2 + LoD expansion... I pawned (PAWNED not pwned..) them at EB games cause they suck... they got really repetetive and boring after playing them for like 6 months..

Hell yeah.

KOTOR 1 is way better then KOTOR 2, cuz obsidian ruined the 2nd compared to the 1st.....they thought they could do as good of job as bioware....but failed. i suggest only playing the 1st.

And why exactly do you think so?

I can only say that I enjoyed KotoR 1 more overall, but I enjoyed KotoR 2 more at the end (except for the very end). I can't say that I think any of them are superior to eachother. If it comes to fun and enjoyment I have to say KotoR 1 is the better. If it's about story (depth and originality) and characters, KotoR 2 is definitely better. But I found KotoR 2 to be boring half the time. It took me 3 attempts to get far enough that I wanted to keep playing.

Hey, just play them. They're great games.

I thought KOTOR 2 had the far superior story. KOTOR 1's little 'twist' is really quite overrated - you could see it coming a mile off. KOTOR 2 is so much darker.

I have to disagree. KOTOR 2's twist was more intellectual than KOTOR 1's twist (i.e Like MGS2's ending compared to MGS1), yet there was no sense of epicness that you would associate with the first game's twist - "Wow, that's cool/awsome/great/unexpected" vs "After all this time trying to saving your lives *this* is what you try to do to me !". In reality, you *knew* where the game was leading you after saving the first Jedi Master on the first optional planet you go to, while your true purpose/past in KOTOR 1 was vague for the three-quarters of the game.

Pretty much it comes down to personal preferance. If you like happy, feel-good twists and endings, KOTOR 1 is for you. If you prefer darker, more complicated twists and endings then KOTOR 2 is for you.

It's really that simple. :)

Not really. I'm not the kind of guy who goes for happy feel good stories. I like serious, thought provoking, intelligent stories. I respect what KOTOR2 tried to do, and I liked the game. However, the plot was badly told. This may have been due to what they cut out of the game, but regardless there were various gaps in story and logic, numerous plot holes, inferior characters, and worse dialogue. KOTOR1 did not have these flaws, and told a better story with better characters and atmosphere than the sequel.

And don't kid yourselves too much, neither of these games were particularly enlightening storywise. But I enjoyed them both more than the movies.

You thought diablo 2 was repetitive so you wanna get.. kotor :|

I disagree. If a book or a movie can be enlightening, I see no reason why a videogame can't be. KOTOR 1 and 2 are up there with the MGS series and Deus Ex to me.

I would agree that a game can be, but I would disagree that KOTOR was. I thought it was the best look at Star Wars I've ever seen, and really added a whole new layer of gray to the movies black and white. It was very good, especially for a game, and especially for the license it was based in. However, the philosophy was ... basic at best.

The only game I would consider to be "enlightening" (and I'm using that word very loosely right now) in any way was Deus-Ex. Not because of the plot itself, but because of how it put you in a position to make decisions which reflected the kind of person you were, and didn't punish you either way.

Eh.. instead of making a new thread on this I'm changing the subject: Should I get Buldars Gate 2 + Expansion? It looks kind of outdated, when was it made? Is it fun? Does it get repetetive? I don't want a Diablo 1 era game, if this is an old game, please recommend me a good game for PC (Has to be kind of old, something I can pick up for $20, I don't have an amazing graphics card, so keep that in mind)

How about dungeon siege 2? I think it's more like baldur's gate than diablo (If I'm remembering baldur's gate right)

afraid all I remember from the Balder's gate series is

"Go for the eye's boo, go for the eyes!"

heh heh I love that miniture giant space hamster

:O

Nothing like Baldur's Gate.

Get Baldur's Gate II and it's expansion. It is an utterly terrific game and, despite it's age, well worth your time and money.
