I'm considering learning kung fu, or some kind of equivilant. Yes, I know I should have learned it when I was a kid, but not all of us have such chances (it was out of town, and my parents didn't have a car).

So, anyone who has learned kung fu, or one of its equivilants, it it worth it?

dude ninjitsu is crazy you'll have such good balance and they teach you how to strike groups of nerves and stun people!!!!!!!! and you'll be a ninja!!!!!!!!!

Wait for Warbie, he is the only reply you really want to hear (he's got experience (or so he says).. He convinced me to take Judo.

I took jujitsu for a while, quite enjoyed it. Seems to have a bit of everything.
Tried judo a bit too, but didn't like it as much.

personally, only reason i see to take martial arts is motivation to get fit and excercise, the chances that you will use the techniques outside of showing off is very very very very very very very very very very low, unless you are a kind of person who provokes fights, in which case, thats your fault.

Yeah a martial art is really good to get into, Karate a lot of my time from early childhood, right up to earlier this year (gave up because it lost its appeal and I was too busy), got me up to a black belt in styles of karate and was able to run my club in one of them lol.

Made the person I am today, great way to learn disapline, control and great way to get fit also. I recommend it. And anyone who shows off about a martial art needs to wiped with their own belt, a guy I used to know, one grade higher than me and went to my school, used to show off how he was a black belt, and he was a complete tosser.

I did Judo for about 3 months. It was amazing. I made my own sound effects and everything. And one week I turned up in a headband and a bathrobe.

It was epic.

I'm doing Northern Shaolin.

My entire body aches like mad every Sunday after class. It's very bruising.

Tae kwon do,

Never did it for long because of piano and risk of breaking fingers :(

In the mind of my parents Piano>Tae kwon do so i had to do piano and not breaky fingers and stuff.

Do some finger push ups, Shaolin style.

You'll be able to climb a mountain using only your pinkies and a thong.

A pair of thongs; one for each foot. Unless you intend to hop up the mountain.

Did I mention I'm Australian?

You fail. I've been doing piano and violin and taekwando (though I dropped that for Northern Shaolin) for years. :/

Your parents are ubar-cautious.

Woa.. I was watching TV yesterday and there was an Australian comedian making a joke about the thong/sandals thing. That's weird.

If you want to do a flashy martial art that will keep your body fit and supple but wont do anything for you in terms of self defence?... take Kung Fu lessons.

If you want to do a straight forward but messy looking martial art that will keep your body fit and supple whilst giving you some awsome self defence skills?... take Jujitsu... specifically Brazilian 'Gracie' Jiu-Jitsu

Most UFC fighters practice jujitsu as part of their fighting discipline
