"Lag Hacks"!?

Alright, I was banned from one of my favourite servers because they accused me of "Lag Hacking", saying that my ping was not showing up correctly and that I was lagging up the server.

... Right. Wtf!? I was experiencing no lag at all, and I have no such 'hacks'. What was going on? Could it have been something in my config, how I set it up?

Any help is appreciated.

lol wow ive never heard of a server with that but haxs can lag the server sometimes but that kinda sux that it would suspect u of hacking just because of high ping

It was a noob admin who doesn't understand how a computer network operates.

A lagging player can't "lag the server" to begin with.

But a laggy player has the advantage of their ping added to the time it will take for a bullet to hit them.

Or a disadvantage for their own aiming. Or for "running into" bullets

Some people can manipulate pings to their advantage, yes, thats why the terms HPB and LPB exist (High Ping Bastard, Low Ping Bastard) to reflect people who are adept in using their ping differences to score kills.

A low ping in a server full of HPB's will give the "lag" effect to the low pinger becuase the HPB's are closer to sync.

Controlled lag is how speed hacking works. As for that server, the admin was just a retard, go into his house at night and murder him in his sleep. Or just ignore it.

did you ever do that artificial ping command? cmd_rateblahblahblah

Thats a very simplistic way of looking at it. Its not really controlled lag, but more a case of controlling what information the client sends to the server.

Basically, IIRC, the speedhack sits between the game and the server and tells the server that the person is somewhere where the game would not normally allow them to be. (for example, 10 metres ahead of their current position). The server moves the person there, as does the hacked client, and its like the speed limit is removed.

Lag is merely network latency.
Its a case of the server going "oh shit, where is he..... hello?.... ah there you are, you've moved to X already!" and thus the person may suddenly jump to X as the server catches up with the stray client. (or the other way round)

Talking of Speed Cheats, You think there's any way that VAC2 could protect against them? Though i don't think so because they're not only used for cheating are they...

(edited old post because I'll work that out myself)

To the client using the cheat, everyone else looks like they are lagging, and to the server it looks like the client is going very fast. That is how you can kill cheaters sometimes. Because Speed hacks interfere with thier aimbot autoshoot affecting the client's shots like real lag shots.

Speedhackers are hilarious. If they don't have a nicely tuned aimbot, they die almost instantly :D

I think I did on one server. It dropped my ping to 5.. But it never did it again. Or some command like that...

But that was on a different server. On this one my ping was around 20-40 (fluctuating, it wouldn't do that with cmd_rate, would it?)... They said I was hiding my real ping and lagging up the server.

EDIT :: Err, and I just went on their forums and asked 'em..

Overconfidence,

I have already discussed your situation with another admin and I don't think it will be a problem getting your ban lifted since it wasn't cheating related. However, I feel it is important to make a few quick points. First, don't do whatever you were doing to "fix" your lag. And second, don't argue with the admins. It was obvious that you had done something to fake your low latency and I could have just banned you for doing that. Instead I warned you and asked you to undo it. In the future just do what I or any admin asks.

If you need help getting your ping to a better number, this is the place to do it. Post a question and ask for help. You'll get 20 ideas on ways to improve the games performance.

R...ight? What do I do now? Oo;;;

That console command only makes your ping display 5. In reality you have the same ping you did before the command.

What value should be there? It says 30 right now..

I get accused of speedhacking on my dsl every now and then. I usually ping 50 to 100 on servers, but nothing extreme.

I sometimes also get accused of aimbotting, but that's because the cs:s headbox is large enough to generate gravity.

Ouch, what speed DSL? 50-100 ping seems a bit high. Are the servers near you?
