In the vein of my original AR2/OSIPR editorial, here's a little something from me on the Lambda Resistance.

I got lost in the plan I wrote halfway through so... post your thoughts on this. :)

The Lambda Resistance

OVERVIEW

The Lambda Resistance is a name for an organized force of humans actively opposing the Combine occupation of Earth and working to reclaim their planet and drive the alien force off it's face. Their primary base of operations is Eastern Europe, more precisely City 17 and the surrounding lands.

The leadership of the organization is composed primarily of ex-Black Mesa personnel, who have survived the resonance cascade, managed to escape the facility before it was obliterated with nuclear fire by the Black Ops and made their way to Eastern Europe, where the Combine appointed administrator of the Earth, doctor Wallace Breen, set up his primary base of operation.

Their symbol is the greek letter Lambda, possibly inspired by the Lambda sector of Black Mesa or the letter on Gordon Freeman's HEV suit.

ORGANIZATION

The Resistance is composed of a large number of independent cells, which can operate as completely separate entities, but also can cooperate much like a real army. The resistance does not posess any ranks per se, the leaders are instead chosen by the resistance fighters by experience, character traits or leadership skills.

A central leadership that keeps track of and coordinates the efforts of the resistance does exist, despite it's highly decentralized structure. It is composed primarily of ex-Black Mesa personnel, and the main leader of the resistance was the late doctor Eli Vance, father of Alyx Vance and an extremely able researcher, who was present in the Sector C test labs on the fateful day of the resonance cascade and personally knew Gordon Freeman.

The role of "military advisor" belonged to an ex-Black Mesa security guard, Barney Calhoun, who apart from organizing and leading the resistance military force was also working undercover in the Civil Protection, a policing force organized by the Combine to keep citizens in check. Barney was a charismatic leader with a tactical mind and during the Uprising in City 17 led the push towards the Citadel and aided the assault on the Overwatch Nexus.

In science, the authorities of the Resistance movement were doctor Isaac Kleiner and doctor Magnusson, both ex-Black Mesa researchers. The former was an absent minded and kind hearted teleportation technology expert, who has set up his laboratory in an abandoned power plant in City 17 and the latter also a portal researcher, but the direct opposite of Kleiner - an arrogant, extremely direct man with little tolerance for incompetence or, worse, outright failure. His mannerisms have earned him a certain form of respect and praise from the Resistance allies, the vortigaunts.

Another important scientist in the Resistance is doctor Judith Mossman, aide to Eli Vance and who was working on recreating the Black Mesa teleportation technology with him, dr Kleiner, Magnusson and Alyx Vance. She originally competed for the post of research assistant in the Black Mesa, but lost to Gordon Freeman due to his Innsbruck experience. She was a double agent, playing a pivotal role in the fall of Wallace Breen and loosening the Combine's grip on Earth.

Two other people play an extremely important role in the workings of the Resistance. The first is Alyx Vance, Eli Vance's daughter and an extremely able mechanic, inventor and researcher by herself. While her father was the leader, she played the role that in pre-Combine armies would be best defined as special forces - always out in the field spying on the Combine, scavenging, inventing, helping the Resistance in any way possible.

The second is doctor Gordon Freeman, a hero of the Black Mesa crisis and a person seen by the rebels as an almost mythical hero. In reality, he is a 27 years old doctor of physics with an HEV suit and remarkable talent for firearms, bashing skulls with a crowbar and keeping his cool under most stressful conditions. His sudden arrival in City 17 after disappearing in Black Mesa over 17 years earlier has sparked a chain of events that eventually led to the fall of Wallace Breen and cutting off the Combine from the Earth, leaving only the forces they had on the planet afterwards.

The core leadership retains control over other Resistance cells, but does not exert it needlessly. Cells are allowed to operate independently and make decisions by themselves, but are required to stay in contact with the central, to monitor their status and if need be, provide help.

The vortigaunts are a special case, as they are one of the most important allies of the Resistance and voluntarily work along them, but do not submit to human leadership totally, with their own agenda also influencing their motives. Within the resistance itself, they act as technicians, medics, support fighters, help with coordinating communications (a form of telepathic link exists between the vortigaunts) and even as a form of mobile electricity sources.

BASES

The Resistance primarily operates out of outposts that are organized so that they can be easily torn down and evacuated in case they were compromised and the Combine forces invaded. The types of these outposts can be roughly divided into urban and outland ones.

In urbanized locations, the Resistance primarily estabilishes their outposts in the canals or similiar locales, as they are easily concealable, being underground and it's much easier to supply them and move between with ample protection and concealement offered by the canals. Prior to Gordon's arrival in City 17, an entire network of outposts, dubbed the 'railway', existed for shipping citizens outside the city to join the rebels in the outlands.

Outland outposts are usually organized in already existing structures, such as houses, sewage treatment plants or as shantytowns. They are usually made with the use of whatever materials were available to the cel occupying it and constructed to be as inconspicuous as possible, to avoid compromising their location and suffer headcrab shelling, as was the case with the outpost just outside City 17 canals.

Usually, outposts are marked with a spraypainted orange Lambda symbol.

Although emphasis on mobility was placed by the resistance, they did maintain at least three major fixed bases: the coast base, Black Mesa East and the White Forest.

The coast base was a major outpost on the outskirts of Ravenholm, sitting on what used to be the sea coast. It served as the main base in this area, coordinating the efforts of outposts placed along the Highway 17 as well as scavenging the nearby rail depots for supplies and offering shelter to resistance fighters.

Black Mesa East, before its destruction by the Combine forces, was the Resistances primary command and research center, with the teleportation technology from Black Mesa being resurrected by the combined efforts of Eli Vance, Judith Mossman, Alyx Vance, dr Kleiner (transmitting from City 17) and the vortigaunts. It was a multi-level hydroelectric power plant laying beneath Ravenholm, spreading deep underground, housing living quarters, kitchens, power generators, research labs and machine shops and was an incredibly important asset of the Resistance.

It's location was concealed and all entry points covered by airlocks with automated defences to protect themselves from any intrusion by the Combine.

Black Mesa East was destroyed by the Combine assault after Judith Mossman informed Wallace Breen that Gordon Freeman arrived at Black Mesa and the Overwatch could capture most of the leaders on the spot with little effort.

The third base was White Forest, an old Soviet ballistic missile silo, located and secured by the rebels. It was still housing an ICBM when it was found and under the guidance of dr. Magnusson, the entire facility was brought back on-line and became the most important asset of the Resistance, as it now housed the means to shut off any access to Earth the Combine might have had.

Apart from these main bases, numerous other outposts that had more or less permanent locations existed, and served various purposes, from simple supply procurement via scavenging to building vehicles.

TECHNOLOGY LEVEL

The Resistance possessed a varying technology level. Their weapons and armor were procured from the Combine (Civil Protection bulletproof vests, MP7s, AR2s), came from pre-War stocks (guided missile launchers) or were manufactured by themselves (e.g. the crossbow, Tau cannon), while their vehicles were primarily manufactured from scavenged parts. The last bit is not a rule, however, as Alyx Vance and other resistance mechanics were able to restore two military helicopters to working condition in the White Forest military base.

The relatively low tech combat equipment (compared to the unified and advanced Overwatch for instance) was compensated by the highly advanced teleportation technology they had developed (e.g. the Magnusson device delivery system deployed outside White Forest), certain high tech devices scavenged or created by the Resistance scientists (the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator or the aforementioned Magnusson Device) and their ability and creativity when it came to developing new means of defence or protection.

MODUS OPERANDI

The Resistance methods of operation most closely mirror that of guerillas. Too weak to attack up front unless they have the numerical advantage, the resistance fighters had to rely on terrain advantage (eg. drawing the enemy into confined spaces in the city, taking the higher ground) or superior tactics (outmaneouvering and ambushing the Combine forces.)

The preferred method of interacting with the Combine was not interacting at all, with the Resistance preferring to lay low and not draw attention to themselves, to avoid them being discovered and destroyed before they would be able to mount a valid resistance.

With the arrival of Gordon Freeman and him triggering a full out assault on the Resistance by the Combine forces, the rebellion begun at full forces, as all citizens rose up in arms and fought the Combine, whether they were previously a part of the Resistance or not.

Mention the bit about how Vortigaunts are used to keep contact between cells.

Really nice, but how do we know Black Mesa East was destroyed? And two helicopters at White Forest? Other then that, just great!

We know that the East site was raided and big lumps of ceiling started raining down. A scorched earth policy fits the Combine mentality.

And Mossman took one helo, and you and Alyx were supposed to take the other...

I started an article on Wikipedia about the resistance, using that very title (Lambda Resistance), under the user name LordEinar. Unfortuneatly because there wasn't a whole ton of info from just Half Life 2 and Episode 1, I had a hard time getting support for it.

I just found this on wiki.

WIKI: The majority of its members appear to be sheltered or current citizens of City 17. They mostly appear to be within their late 20s to early 30s, meaning they're the latest human generation due to the Combine's suppression field, which prevents human reproduction.

If that was true, the supression field would have been setup even before half life started back on black mesa.

Hacks!

Do you have no life?
good work, though.

Not necessarily...no doubt most of the young and old would have been killed by Xen wildlife in addition to the war...

True that, although i could not imagien all of em.

Unless, the combine got rid of everybody who presented a weakness. Like kids and older people.

Maybe the ideal age for a combine worker/soldier is around the 20's and 30's.

interesting.
