LAN Connection without router?

Well me and my friend would like to play a game through LAN. The thing is he only has dial up and i was wondering if it was possible to just hook the two computers up through an ethernet cable. Without the need of a high speed connection or a router.

well to answer ur question yes you can, but i personaly dont know how to do it. It has something to do with a prgram built into windows that allows you to share an internet connection bewtween 2 computers without the use of a router or nething.i dont know the exact name, its something really obvious tho, like internet connection sharring wizard or something like that, someone o nhere is bound to know tho

The computers are fairly close to each other. What exactly is a crossover?

There is a way of telling if your cat5 cable is a crossover cable, http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/701/14.html#topic7 here is a link that will help you find out if the cable you have/you bought/you are going to buy is a crossover cable, if it doesn't state that it is one.

Crossover cables are expensive last I saw, but they do come in handy for times like that. Why don't you just buy a hub? Those are much cheaper than a router or switch.

Hubs may be a bit cheaper, but their performance drop are not really worth the cheaper price. I'd really suggest getting a switch.

However, if your LANing without a router, then that means you don't have DHCP, which means you'll have to manually assign IP addresses to the computer in the LAN.

I've done this before without a crossover cable, i dont remember how though.

Oh wait, i think i had bridged a wireless connection to the ethernet, then connected it to the other pc.

I've Done it with out a crossover cable many times, just set one computer to 192.168.0.1 and then let the other one on auto, and works perfectly, but i also read that this is not common, it might have to do with my Ethernet card, behind able to know to swap the 2 cables that would normally be switched.
