I'm planning on hosting a small LAN party in a couple weeks and this is a game we're considering running. But nobody owns a copy of it, yet. We're thinking of just getting HL2-DM (skipping the main game). Is it possible to play HL2-DM without having HL2?

And can we copy installations? Since the product (HL2-DM) is not sold separately in stores, it appears we would have to install through Steam. While, ideally, we would like to each have a legit copy in the end, we don't want to have to run the download installer ten times. I have read from this forum about how to make illegitimate copies, but for $10 each, why not have a legit copy and we can join games online?

Does anyone know how we can accomplish this? Thanks.

it's not that hard: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=320&

I believe once one of you is done downloading you can transfer the GFC-files and then activate the product on the other machines.(I'm not entirely sure in what stage of the purchase processs you get the activation code though)you will ALL have to make the purchase.(you just skip having to download multiple times)

Just thought I'd mention my solution (in case someone else has a similar interest).

The package "HL: Episode One" includes HL2: Deathmatch. Best Buy has a sale on Episode One, for $9.99, and (mentioned online, not necessarilly in stores) on all "budget" software ($9.99 and under), they offer buy 2 get 1 free. Great deal for a LAN party. I'm buying them for an average of $7 each and selling them for $10 at the party (makes up for some of my other expenses).
