language of people in HL2

I always wondered why the people in HL2 all speak with US accents, except for the Colonel and Father Grigori. Does this mean all the Eastern European locals were killed, along with all the children (freaky voices in the playground in Point Insertion scared the crap out of me!). One theory would be that all remaining human population were spread throughout the whole world.

What do you all think?
 
I think that for authenticity you should change your steam language setting to russian. That'll fix those US accents for you.
 
I played Portal with Russian at end I nearly killed myself :S
 
It is speculated that the worlds populations have been shifting around constantly for years. "This is the second time I had to move in 3 months." is one of the first things said to you by the passenger on the train. Maybe America was so utterly devastated by the combine invasion there wasn't any place left to sustain the population. Or maybe all the resources had been gathered in that section of the world, and they were shifting the population to Europe to assist in the harvesting taking place there.

The place were Chell poped up at the end of portal looked alright. Forest and birds cherping and most likly the Aperture center is in America.
 
The citizens of City 17 are Americans that have been relocated to Eastern Europe by the Combine. It is probable that all of citizens of the Combine have been moved to Eastern Europe and perhaps grouped according to native country.

Theres a black person getting of the train at the begining of HL2 there native country is Africa not easter europe...of cource fossil evidence show all humans evoled and moved from Africa so technicly going by what you said all the citys including 17 are in africa.

As the people before him, I think he's asking why there isn't at least a few citizens here and there that are speaking a different language or English with a heavy accent. I don't know anything about programming for games, maybe using multiple languages simultaneously creates some kind of negative effect. I think it has more to do though with the technical side of the game rather than the story. As I can't see how this could be based in Eastern Europe and the player not run into at least a couple people speaking a different language.

I don't think the combine found that area at all. If they did than they would have known about the myriad of secrets related to aperture science and the Borealis.

Yeah, a black American...

The most obvious explanation for the mostly American population in the eastern European City 17 is that the Combine are constantly relocating people so no closely-knit communities or organizations can form. Of course, it would have felt more authentic if there were some European, Asian and African people scattered among the Americans, since people seem to be relocated individually rather than in groups of nationality. But in the end these are mere details.

I was reacting to the technicality of your post. I thought it was funny how you brought the origins of mankind and scientifical facts on a very large scale into a debate about the cities of Half-Life 2. :LOL:

I doubt the black guy was relocated from africa if that's what you mean? There are black people everywhere, they're not ALL african but they have african roots. I apoligise if i have misunderstood.
 
You do misundersatnd. If you would read the post in witch I first make the staement your refering to it's in responce to someone saying that the Combine relocated people based on there native country. Black people's native country is Africa.

No..no theres not. They came form Africa the native country is Africa. My race's native country is Euroupe. Every race has a native country it's not racsist it's just fact.

Africa is a continent. Also, there are plenty of black people in the world who have never set foot in Africa.
 
Yes but I'm talking about native continent. Were a race developed, came about, started. And if I remember correctly the people in jamaica were broght there by the english and such. And I'm so frekin sorry for saying country instead of continet I'm so disappointed by myself oh why was I even born were did my life go so wrong :( (I hate grammer police)
 
They don't sound american on mine, only Barney does, because he is, and Kleiner has that weird none accent voice, but most of my citizens just have ordinary voices, no american accents, only a few have accents.

But I just say that the combine have forced the population to learn the english language because the majority speak it and the combine first appeared in america I would imagine, which is probably why vortagaunts speak english as well.

I don't think so. America, at least Northern America, is even worse than Europe in Half Life.

I'm not sure but I think the Aperture Science HQ is in the US since it's a US-based company.
