they reviewed the BFG 6800 Ultra OC and mentioned that nvidia says they were too conservative stating a required 480 watt power supply and that a 350 would do. I've ordered this card and I have a 420 watt PSU. will this actually be enough? since will be running a 3500+ AMD64, 2 opticals, 2 drives, floppy, 7 fans and fan controller thingy?

It is enough.
350Watt is what they recommend now.

I don't know about Ultra but I am running 6800GT on 350W and I have 2xHD and 2xDVD

yeah ive heard that to.
i dont know how much power ur system needs but u do have pretty much stufff in it.
i would better be safe if i where u and buy a good quality power supply.

because i had 350W power supply and it worked for 2 years with a 9700pro but 3 days ago i got a x800xt PE and my power supply burned out  and now im hoping only my power supply died from it!! :flame:

and they said the x800xt didnt need THAT much power but maybe it was because my 350W wasnt that good quality.

so if i was u i would buy a good 1 and not some cheapo version with high W because that doesnt say everyting

heres a site for good power supply's :

Listen to this man. He speaks from experience!

Sorry about your PSU, hope that's all that needs fixing.

I think the big thing was, Do not overclock your 6800ultra AT ALL, unless you have that 480watt cpu or better.

Well here's a story, I was playing Doom 3 the other day with my OC'ed 9800XT and I started to smell something burning, like plastic burning. I opened up my case and it stank real bad, I checked the card and the bloody molex connector was faulty! I took it out of the card and it burnt my fingers and the cable connection was completely black, with smoke coming out of it. The protective plastic covering the actual cables on the molex connector had been melted back somewhat. I was pretty lucky it didn't start a fire or do some other serious damage to my computer. But after that I'm getting like an expensive thermaltake PSU. The one that burned out was an cheap 'AOpen' 350Watt one. Never again am I buying a cheap PSU.

That "burning out" was most likely caused by a high resistance in the wire, i.e. you didn't push it in far enough, or it somehow worked it's way loose.

or the 9800Xt just attempted to kill your comp like most all ati cards to

Erm, how exactly do ATI card "attempt to kill you comp"? That is possibly the most ignorant, moronic thing I have ever seen posted on a hardware forum.

Well, the case I'm getting is a Thermaltake Xaser III, comes with a 420W Silent Purepower psu. are the ones in these cases quality or should I look to replace it?

Thermaltake makes decent power supplies.
Keep it in your system for now but if you notice any issues such as randm restart it might be a signal that you need a better powersupply.
If that powersupply will run your components fine then there is no point in buying a new one unless you are experiencing problems.

yeah that might be true because the night before my power supply burned out my pc just rebooted itself while i was playing the game, and the next day it burned out while playing the game.

i just thought the game had a error or something ;(

Really? So you think it wasn't a faulty PSU? now that you mention it, the connector to the Radeon felt loosish...In fact every now and then when I booted up it would say it wasnt connected properly so I'd have to push it it further. Hmmmm, interesting...

Yeah, a poor connection gives a higher resistance, which 99% of the time is what causes high temperatures in electrical circuits.

make sure you plug in your plugs well hehe. who said not to oc the card? the 6800 ultra I'm getting is by BFG and is OC'd a little bit by default.

Thats what I got
Some people have said they got theres to 475 core and 1200 memory with stock cooling. I dont know how high I will be able to get mine. I would be happy with 450 core and 1200 memory.
I am probably going to wait and let the arctic silver BFG put on reach its full potential befor I overclock though. I might try one of those new silencers but they look so ugly. Good thing I dont have a case window.
