Latest performance tweaks from Valve messed up my game

Well, the title says it all. When TF2/Orange Box was new, everything was working properly, basically I had constant FPS and ping. Then came the patch that wrecked performance on some (lowered my FPS a bit) and when that was fixed, I'm now getting the best FPS ever BUT I get insane lag spikes every now and then. This seems to be somewhat related to caching since it only happens per session when I see something new like a new type of enemy appearing in front of me from behind the corner or something like that.

Anyone else?
 
Well, there have been two performance-killing patches:

9th of october
31th of october

The last one had a fix, but the first one never got reverted.
 
Oddly enough, the only problem I had was my rates got reverted to 3000 from 10000, thus causing all kinds of hell. I fixed that though, and everything is back to normal \= Not sure about you.
 
where your ping is a good 50ms, then jumps to 500 for a second.
 
That's exactly what it is. Most commonly it's something like running with a pyro to enemy soldier from behind, activate flamethrower, see as the game almost locks up for a few seconds and then return to game showing your blown up corpse.

Annoying.
 
have you tried checking your rates? Just for S&Gs?
 
cl_cmdrate "30"
cl_updaterate "20"

Couldn't find any other rates from config.cfg. Seem a bit low...
 
I'm having the same issues. Lockups that last a second or so just when you don't need them - like as a Pyro pops out and starts squirting flames. This didn't happen with the beta or on release.
 
when I first installed the game, I had "rate" set to 10000. After the patch, it dipped it down to 3500. I then had the same settings for cmdrate/updaterate the same as you, which were 100 for both. I put everything back to my normal, and fixed.
