Launching games in DX8

I have noticed that i cant play games very long on DX9, even tho i use a DX9 compatible video card and all other requirements to run games on DX9. The games either crashes or freezes. If i run the games on DX8 they work perfectly. I can run any steam game on DX8 through the launch options, but how do i do it with other games. For example, i want to run CnC3: Tiberium Wars in DX8 because it crashes all the time, even with patch 1.04

If it's even possible to run Tiberium Wars in DX8, I imagine you'll have to hunt for some sort of console command to force it to do so. Also, just a word to the wise - it crashes all the time anyway. We're running it on 7900GTs here and it manages to freeze/crash almost once an hour regardless.
