Learning how to sing

I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now and that's been my main focus, I've been in a few bands but I'm not currently involved with any at the moment. During the last few weeks I've been picking songs up and trying to learn how to sing and play at the same time. I think I've mostly gotten the hang of that and I'll improve with practice, however, that still leaves me with one problem, I can't sing worth for crap.

So I've come to these forums wondering if anyone had any advise they could share with me regarding learning how to sing on your own (no teachers, can't afford it right now). Any tips, techniques, exercises, anything would be welcome. I think it would really enhance the whole experience for me so I'm giving it a shot!

Basically just sing along with your favourite songs first without trying to copy the singer. Once you find your voice sing on your own, then try singing while playing.
It's all about finding what's comfortable for your voice

I disagree. I listen to plenty of bands where most people hate the singer but I love it. No matter how you sing, there will always be a base for it

could go to a singing teacher if you really want to be good...It can be a natural talent but with training you can develop it too.

Singing is mostly natural. You can go to a teacher to learn some good techniques on how to use your voice, but you won't be able to change the sound you were born with.

There are plenty of singers with crappy voices that make it big. Just look at Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Maynard James Keenan, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, etc etc. They don't have the range or power of people like Eddie Vedder/Layne Staley, but they still made good music.

^ you make a good point - the only difference is that nowadays record companies (should you actually want to make it) seem to require you to be able to actually change. If any of those above artists tried to launch their careers now it would probably be much harder...
