I payed some attention to what is going on in Lebanon the last couple of weeks and it seems like things might actually go well there. Most of the population, judging from the protests, is proamerican and pro democracy. If we can actually make democracy take shape there this could be a huge success. The UN had a huge role in this, and I hate to say it, but so did Bush. If everything goes well there I think this might be the first time I will have to give Bush credit on not screwing up on foreign policy. He put pressure on Syria with the backing of the UN and the backing of most Lebanese people which is proving to be a good thing.

Did you post this in my flip flop thread as well? if not, please do so.

I think the 800k protesters showing the 500k what for is awesome.

I don´t see here any special merits of Bush.

There is UN resolution 1559 and it is being implemented by Syria.

What I see, is a selectivity in pressure on implementing of UN resolutions:

Syria calls for implementing all UN resolutions
http://countrywatch.school.aol.com/aol_wire.asp?vCOUNTRY=167&UID=1384176

"Syria called on Thursday for a full implementation of all UN resolutions, with a clear reference to Israel which is not blamed while having not carried out relative UN resolutions, the official SANA news agency reported.

"Syria respects every resolution of international legitimacy, but at the same time the international community should also follow up and implement all of its resolutions with no selectivity," Syrian Expatriates Minister Buthaina Shaaban said when meeting a British media delegation."

"Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Lebanese counterpart Emile Lahoud on Monday announced a two-phase pullout plan, but it still failed to quench dissatisfaction of the West, headed by the United States, which, together with France, was the sponsor of Resolution 1559.

Shaaban said implementing all UN resolutions "will help establish a just and comprehensive peace in the region and it is the same peace that Syria has been calling for."

looks like all the countries are blocking the US, and only listening to the UN...

I feel dirty defending Bush in this but I have to in this case. The UN did have a huge roll in this; however, the pressure Bush put on Syria did too.

From the resolution:

headed by the United States, which, together with France, was the sponsor of Resolution 1559
If anything this is an example of where the UN did a great job of working together but you also have to give Bush credit.

Beacause the UN is the world community, covering almost all the people of the world, while the US only has 4,6% of the world's population.

Thank god those people in Lebanon were inspired to stand up for thier own freedom and democracy!!!

And I'm sure there's money for the UN to pocket in this so it sounds like its win-win for everyon huh.
