Lots of gameplay videos are now available from IGN from the new campaigns including Parish. We have also uploaded the L4D 2 E3 Trailer (HD version available) and added a L4D 2 info section on the site.[br]

The rock paper shotgun podcast grills Chet Faliszek over all the new features behind L4D2, with Chet explaining why Valve have moved onto a sequel. L4D1 will still receive updates as L4D2 grows alongside. Download the podcast here.

hmm. a lot of the horror element is gone when the environment is so sunny and open. this doesn't look scary or intense at all.

Pretty meh really. :|

I agree with you guys. The scary vibe is gone with playing it in the daylight. From what I've seen so far this gets a big meh from me too.

Bring on EP3 already.

Left 4 Dead had a scary atmosphere in the first place?

i don't know about you guys, but this looked like L4D with tweaked and extra content.

I thought at first Valve will announce L4D DLC2.0

Incendiary ammo is gonna destroy in Versus if they have it there.

If you really can't see why I pity you.

Normal ammo doesn't put a dot on the infected from a single shot. No more second chances at attacking, if they see and shoot you with even one bullet you're dead.

Yeah... I don't know why they would make a whole new game instead of just release new maps... I could see new maps with different characters and bosses, including weapons, just have those new things on the other maps...

But the 3 guys 1 girl thing seems kinda... ... Silly.

I really think Valve might lose money with this.

With MS announcing I bet they've put up a bunch of the backing money, I'd be surprised if Valve lost out even if it tanks.

im going to give this a try for sure but doesn't seem all that scary now that it's daylight and all i dont know night time just make's it more freaky

New maps and models. Yeah, that qualifies it as a sequel.

Except there's more than that. Nice strawman -.-

Looks fun to me, a lot more depth than L4D. With the success of L4D in the PC and console market, doing a sequel makes sense to build the company further by giving more to the console market too.

I'm not bothered, companies have gotta make a profit and expansion is good for us. More people @ Valve = more titles and quicker turn around times. I don't think Gabe will let quality slip whatsoever.

We've still got a lot of E3 to go, and I expect Episode 3 information without a doubt shortly, and something else. Prospero...or whatever it may be :)

Sorry. An Axe, a pan and incendiary ammo will also be included.
How could i leave those ground breaking features out? Silly me.

Still intentionally leaving things out or are you just thick?

So several new campaigns, new weapons, new characters, new boss, improved AI director which can change maps depending on performance and a storyline qualify as a simple DLC?

BLah blah blah. You guys are just being negative cause your ticked with Valve.

Obviously from viewing these short clips you can't tell enough about the game to know if it's going to be scary or not. We never got to see the mobile witch, which sounds scary.

No, you are just gullible.

Twwix,

It's an expansion pack, nothing more. Label it as an "improved" sequel all you want.

Here is HD youtube trailer for you lovely peeps.

The vast majority sequels on the same engine can be expansion packs tbh, you have no argument.

There are definitely going to be more new THINGS than what little they've shown so far, that's clear from the interview.

Not to mention there are (at least) five months of development left for things to be improved and added, so I see no point in complaining right now.

Seriously Valve attracts so many whiners I feel sorry for them. Considering they are like the only company to give away free content instead of nickel and dimming their customers. I thought people would be pleased with Valve releasing a sequel so fast compared to how long they usually take.

I noticed in one of the videos that the duel pistols are different, one appears to be a glock, so im assuming there will be multiple pistols.

I'd be annoyed if I just picked up L4D.

As a rule of thumb, I am always against fast sequels because usually a sufficient span of time hasn't passed for there to be any meaningful evolution of a series. Valve may be different here, so we'll see.

Calling it "Left 4 Dead 2" seems like a sham.

Perhaps it will include enough content to be worthy of the "sequel" title come November, but as it stands it looks like an update.

Also I'm confused because Left 4 Dead isn't even a year old yet, and releasing content this fast is unheard of for Valve.

I hope they haven't discovered the current "nickel-and-dime" trend...

haha everyone is still crying

Hey, it's Disco Stu!

If it really does have enough new content, however, we can count it as a sequel, or at least an expansion pack. I wouldn't expect them to design a new engine or create a Source 2.0 until after HL2: Episode 3 gets released. Like Fallout 2 and Fallout, or Homeworld 2 and Homeworld, etc. Maybe we're just becoming spoiled with the advent of DLC to expect any sequel to keep raising that graphics bar (and the minimum system requirements). Though I'll reserve judgement until they finalize all the pieces of the game and we see just how much new content we're getting. I'm wary about the November 2009 release date; I'd expect it in 2010.

It also looks like a way for them to introduce new gameplay mechanics. Maybe they didn't want to disturb the success of L4D's formula, and had enough new mechanics in mind to warrant a sequel. They seem like they'll run the games together--Left 4 Dead will have the basic formula intact, and L4D2 will have altered mechanics for them to play with. Seems the Director can change aspects of the level now, and rewards more for taking longer routes, and the new Infected might create balance issues in the vanilla L4D. The fact that we have melee weapons now might mean stricter ammo limits; perhaps even the pistols have ammo limits, too.

It could also be from a narrative point of view, being new characters and locales. As for the daylight, that may only be that one map, and may have been done simply because the other maps occur at night (except for Dead Air, which appears to be dawn or dusk).

I've seen mention of it being a Microsoft Store DLC. Any confirmation? If that's the case, maybe this game won't be the cost of a full game. Perhaps only half or however much they charge.

I think once we learn the price, we'll have a better way of judging it. If its the price of a normal expansion pack, then it would a sequel more in the name than the game.

EDIT: Also, with all the other free content that VALVe has provided us with, I think we can cut them some slack until we learn more about the game and how it'll work.

Anyone who has a descending opinion on L4D2 somehow becomes a "whiner"

I am upset by this. I feel like the money I spent on L4D has been wasted and I'll soon be wishing I had L4D instead. Hurm.

You dropped, what, $50 on L4D, and got free updates and support outta the deal? You're probably going to drop, what, $50 on L4D2, and get free updates and support outta the deal? And you're going to feel cheated?

1. We don't know how much L4D2 will cost.
2. We don't know all the features.
3. We don't know that L4D2 will entirely replace L4D.
4. We don't know that Valve won't continue to add new content for L4D.

But hey, ya'll can continue whining like spoilt children.

1. True
2. True, but but we do know they will add more depth than L4D provided
3. It won't
4. Listen to the podcast in the first post. Chet gets asked this question. I'll clarify.

Chet said. LEFT 4 DEAD WILL STILL BE UPDATED AFTER LEFT 4 DEAD 2 IS RELEASED.

Just like to say that seeing this my 1st thought was wtf Valve, this isnt you.

Let me give you an example look and Counter-Strike Source still no CS2 because they do things right. If its a full on sequel there is no way they should release in 1 year. Not to mention Team Fortress 2 all the character class updates and map updates is probably equal to all the "new" features in Left 4 Dead 2.

Another thing that bothers me is Valve said wait until Left 4 Dead ships and well talk about Episode 3. Well.....Even if they do talk about Episode 3 its now in direct competition with another Valve game.

This has LAME written all over it. To me Valve was the perfect company. Right now they just lost some armor.

It makes no ****ing sense for Left 4 Dead to be updated or supported after this even if they do. Valve has said countless times how it hates splitting up its community. WTF made them change there mind.

The only way i can justify this ****ing stupidity is by thinking that Turtle Rock is some how doing things "on there own" still.

.

This is a very good point.

I only need to make a few clicks around this section of the forum to see people pining for changes to both L4D and TF2, and then Valve deliver and bam, people are now whining about the changes or enjoying the fixes. It goes either way and that's understandable. Valve know that L4D is a pretty popular game - it's doing well, things are and have been smoothed out and more stuff is on the way - but what we're seeing in L4D2 is way out of the gameplay mechanics league of what we're already adjusted to. New weapons, enemies, daylight, melee tools... imagine the chaos that would fall upon forums and inboxes alike if suddenly Verses mode had a chainsaw and because it was added in late (or better yet, tacked on) a whole bunch of balancing issues go right out the window. Hek, the nerfing and strenghening of certain enemies tilted the game into whole new directions, what would happen if we waited three months and got a new enemy that was way too overpowered for Dead Air?

The fact is, Valve are going to continue updating L4D whilst running L4D2 so if you aren't a fan of the one, go with the other. I love L4D but I'm jumping ship as soon as possibly simply because I'm eager to sink my teeth into new content. I'll keep my old copy of L4D close by of course, because it's still going to have content delivered aswell.

I strongly urge everyone to listen to Chet in the podcast and if I weren't about to go to bed when it finishes, I'd type up the most interesting parts. Someone should do something like that, but regardless, he explains perfectly as to why they're started on a clean slate.
