Valve announced in a post on the Left 4 Dead blog that the Steam Workshop support for Left 4 Dead 2 would arrive in closed beta form later this week at an unspecified date. The post arrived as a conclusion to this weekend's Free to Play event, which allowed any player on Steam to try all of the game's content completely free. The event appears to have been a success, with Left 4 Dead 2's player numbers hitting around thirty to forty thousand at certain periods over the weekend, several times more than Left 4 Dead 2 usually receives.

Left 4 Dead 2 will become Steam Workshop's 17th title and Valve's 4th game to use the service. The Workshop will provide players with easy and quick access to custom campaigns, mutations and other mods which have previously been uploaded to sites such as L4DMaps, a community hosted website. Valve also reiterated the upcoming release of "new tools", which will apparently help content creators design "new experiences". More information will be available closer to release.
