A required update for the Left 4 Dead Demo has been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:
[br]
Left 4 Dead Demo
  • Fixed a bug where the connection to a server would get stuck in a looping state
  • Made sv_steamgroup_exclusive not connect to matchmaking. Removed sv_unreserve, private servers should sv_steamgroup_exclusive now
  • Improved the speed in finding a game lobby
  • Fixed a bug that could cause you to search for a game lobby indefinitely

Nice post AciD
I hope it fixes the problems I'm having with the demo.

Well problems aside, at least they are working over the weekend to get it sorted before the launch. Hope it works out ok.

Anyone know if there's a way to start a local server without attempting to matchmake repeatedly until you get to be the lobby leader, by chance? Except for starting a dedicated server that is...

I just go to the "Play with Friends" screen, then click "Create Lobby".

Ah, never clicked "Play with Friends" as I don't have any friends ;)

Just tried that and it doesn't appear to work with public servers. As soon as you switch it to "public" as the type, it just does what the normal method does - joins existing lobbies if they exist...

I'm getting a bit fed up with the matchmaking. It only works about 1 in 5 times, if I'm lucky. Just tried to join games, and keep getting servers where everyone has rubbish pings. Then I tried to join existing games and first time it joined me to a LAN only server, next two times to servers that were already full... Then I quit and gave up.

Join some of the larger L4D community groups, and you get a server list with the servers bound to those communities, HL2.net l4d411 etc

Agreed, the matchmaking is shit, doesn't make me too hopeful for when teh full game is released in 2 days.

I love the _idea_ behind matchmaking, but even when used at it's simplest it's broken most of the time. It rarely works perfectly. It needs more control over it too - it's too much of a 'black box' as it is - the inability to create your own lobby being just one example of this.

You can create your own lobby...

Can you create your own _public_ lobby?

Yep. Just start a game through "play with friends", then "start the lobby" and finally make it public to everyone. Can't remember the name of the button, but it's there.

It's a very long way round, as far as I can see. You've got to create a private lobby, then make it public. It won't let you directly create a public one, it just joins you to an existing lobby.

In terms of number of clicks it's a fair number, when every other valve game has a 'Create server' option straight on the main menu...

7 clicks vs 2 clicks.
