Left 4 Dead, has gone gold and is now pre-loading to those who pre-purchased the game via Steam.
[br]Left 4 Dead is the new survival action game from Valve for the PC and Xbox 360 that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games.[br]Those who pre-order the game via Steam save 10% off the regular price and may pre-load the game so they are able to play at 12:01 am EST on November 18th, 2008 when the game is made available.
[br]The pre-order discount is also available for both the PC and 360 versions at participating retail outlets.
The official demo for the game is available only till Left 4 Dead is released so make sure you try it soon[br]Full press release here

This news and your cat is adding to the already existing pain that is waiting for the bloody game to be released :frown:

(1) Does the pre-loading re-download the files that are already present from the demo?
(2) Is that definitely 12.01 EST or is it actually PST like it usually is?

Midnight EST yup. Also it's all the files in the demo but I'm pretty sure you can't transfer the files over. I have no clue but I would just pre-load the files just to avoid any conflicts. :)

If they would only let us play it earlier.

All the people preloading creates huge strain on the servers. I can no longer run my Steam :)

1) Yes, I started preloading hoping it wouldn't but it does. However you can copy the contents of the demo folder to the full game folder to save some downloading. Mine went from 8% to 23% so it seems to work fine (I'll probably verify my game files before I play just to be sure though)

Edit: Actually make that 8% to 50% or something, the way Steam works it's kinda hard to tell but it has helped.

2) I'd be surprised if it wasn't PST as usual.

ah shi- and I thought the demo was the pre-load too. Oh well, steady 1.8 mb/s, only 1 minute to get to 10% done.

Here's what I posted on another forum:

I started my pre-load. Paused it. Closed Steam, deleted the L4D folder it created and then renamed my L4D demo folder to "Left 4 Dead." Restarted Steam and unpaused my download. The percentage complete is counting up a LOT quicker then had I not done that. Now I just have to hope it doesn't end up with some old files or bad file names. But verifying the game should fix that after release.

I'm now at 30% after just minutes on a 1.5mbit connection.

If you have a slow connection, try it. Just don't blame me if it doesn't work.

Edit: I'm now at 55% 7 minutes after posting the above but I'm only downloading around 100 - 130kb/s.

Edit 2: And now it's at 100% but still downloading. Looks like I can't rely on the percentage. Still, if it all works out I will have saved like 1gb of downloading or more.

I don't want to know. I'm not getting the game till the 23rd AND I'll be working ;(

That wasn't too bad, took less than 2 hours even though it was using nowhere near bandwidth capacity.

I never seem to have a problem downloading through Steam, steady 1.5mb a sec all the way. I don't get that kind of speed on anything else.

Wow, you guys honestly can't wait 4 more days?? :p,
