Electronic Arts has revealed that the retail release of Left 4 Dead on xbox 360 and PC has reached 1.8 million copies sold up till 2008. This doesn't include any purchases through Steam (being digital distribution and not figures EA has access to).[br]Note this also omits any data from January and February of this year. As I'm sure you can guess, Steam sales are likely to be very high too. Shacknews. (thanks to hool10 for link)

Steam sales probably romped that number too. Nice job Valve. Retail alone almost covers the cost of their ad campaign ten-fold.

This was posted on the Shacknews comments:
I'm sure most of the sales were from the X360. It has an ungodly attach rate:

The console breakdown on sold at retailers:

NPD November 2008:
X360: Left 4 Dead - 410k

NPD December 2008
X360: Left 4 Dead - 629K

Total (So Far on 360 alone):
1.03 million

NPD Janurary 2009:
Will be announced in 10 or so days...

Wonder if this includes pre-orders.

Good to know. Despite difficult economic times, it's nice knowing that Valve is able to stay afloat.

....because we all want more L4D campaigns.

Update day of defeat please. We want a beach map.

/agenda off.

Fix the bugs in Source please because competitive play should be taken into account when making games.

Awesome!

I'm one of those 1.8 million people!

I'd like to think I helped with those figures since I talked many of my friends into buying it. Only two of them didn't like the game.

Steam sales are most likely higher than PC retail sales anyways. And thats only to the end of 08. Estimates would be probably around 3.3-3.5 million total.
