I was looking at the Steam stats today, and at the bottom of the list was a game called "[MAIN] Left 4 Dead"

This list of games is ONLY games that Steam supports. Not shortcuts or even 3rd party mods. Only games you can download through Steam.

Now, knowing that, could this be someone testing out the Left4Dead demo? It links to this store page:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/870/

That redirects to the homepage, which leads be to believe that there is something sneaky going on...hopefully this means the demo is coming very soon!

I tried running "steam://install/870", but it did nothing.

Edit: It is now no longer visible in the list

(Digg this. :P)

You can simply create a mod, and tell steam it is called "Left 4 Dead"

All others will see "So and So is playing Left 4 Dead"

Yeah, that's someone doing testing out on L4D.

Not really news-worthy though.

I saw that there a few weeks ago.
anyway, I thought Left 4 Dead's appid was 500.

Yeah if I wanted to fool people, I wouldn't put the [MAIN] part in. Great find and it probably is them getting the demo ready on the Steam network. A few times when I was in the l4d411 chat room a dev would be playing "a game". I would try and connect to "the game" and it said it was launching, but nothing ever happened. I did a trace on the IP though and it said it was in Belluvue, WA and that was it.

That list only shows games you can buy through steam.
Look for a popular mod, such as Pirates Vikings and Knights. Notice how it's not there.

Heh. I'm not going to prove it to you. You obviously don't possess much knowledge about how steam works and interfaces with programs. Look it up yourself.

Then where are all the mods in that list?

On that list are all of the "Official" Steam games through the service (or any powered by SteamWorks).

Here is the list of mods: http://www.steampowered.com/status/game_stats.html

L4D just happened to be put onto the main service for a little bit, and they just hid the data.

Internally though, all development and such is on Steam (so a build is updated, they will get the binary update through Steam, just like the rest of us).
