The first trailer for Legend of the Guardians has appeared on online. This film (based on the series of popular young adult books) is the first foray into animation by 300 and Watchmen director, Zack Snyder.
I’ll be the first to admit that this film (which recently changed its title from Guardians of Ga’Hoole) has shown up on my radar rather late. Did I miss much? Take a look at the Legends of the Guardians trailer for yourself and then tell me…
As far as the story, here’s an official synopsis:
Soren, a young barn owl, is kidnapped by owls of St. Aggie’s, ostensibly an orphanage, where owlets are brainwashed into becoming soldiers. He and his new friends escape to the island of Ga’Hoole, to assist its noble, wise owls who fight the army being created by the wicked rulers of St. Aggie’s. The film is based on the first three books in the series Guardians of Ga’Hoole by author Kathryn Lasky.
Look… as far as I’m concerned, the most impressive thing about this movie is the voice cast that Zack Snyder has assembled, which includes the likes of Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin (Lost), Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Jay Laga’aia, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Richard Roxburgh, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess (21), Hugo Weaving and David Wenham.
We’ve been talking behind the scenes here at SR and several of us are of the opinion that GGI owls are just plain creepy. My GF is ‘noided out by birds in general (as well as fantasy/epics), so she won’t likely be attendance – nor will I, likely, since seeing a fantasy/epic animated owl movie is just too weird to brave alone. The movie is also being released in September and by now I know better than to go near movies released in the months of September or February. Never a good omen.
But hey, I like Zack Snyder and his unique filmmaking style – plus the animation and set designs look super-pretty so who knows… maybe I’ll come around…
Legend of the Guardians swoops into theaters on September 24, 2010.
