I got a serial # for HL2 from someone who doesn't play anymore, and I want to try CS:source online. Unfortunately, I didn't get the installation CDs. I figured all I would need to do is download HL2 from a torrent file then activate it on steam. Unfortunately, steam doesn't recognize that I have HL2 on the harddrive, and asks me to install HL2 when I try to activate it with my serial number.

Is there anything I can do without those CDs?

You have got so much wrong. You can't download a torrented version, because the steam version is completely updated and different. Also the torrent version runs without steam so it wouldn't work.

Number 2, if you got the serial code from a friend, and he's bored of it, that means the code has been used. Once a code has been BINDED to a steam account (an email and password), the serial code becomes useless as the account has the serial attached to it now. Therefore if you want to play anything you need his username and password. If you log into his account to play you can download any of the games he has bought from the steam servers to play.

But then the friend won't be able to play games with his own account, at least when you're on it at the time.

...code has been BINDED to a steam account...

*cough*bound*cough*

;)

Did the guy charge you for the key? Cos if he did and didn't give you the username and pass, then he shafted you.

no, the key was free. I'll have to ask him for the steam account too.

Get Steam. Login and wait for the game to download.

Easy...
