Lego Universe

A LEGO MMO? The idea is awesome. But what type of game is it, RPG?

probably a "build anything" game like Second Life

That'd be awesome. I sure hope there will be no restrictions on what you can build.

We should all get it and make a god damn HL2.net Lego city. Cover everything in lasers of course. I mean..thats what I did with all of my lego creations when I was younger. Don't know bout you guys >_>

That's kick ass concept trailer... I remember NetDevil had a bunch of people around GDC passing out "We're hiring!" cards with little lego blocks on the back of the card too to give you a hint on what you would be doing.

Can't wait for more details with this.

interesting

we'll see how fun it is to actually play though.

I love Lego, and I'm honest enough to admit that I still make stuff out of it now. Colourful and childish though it may look, it's brilliant for concept modelling when you haven't access to wood or a workshop.

That, and I like to build tanks and dropships and other military stuff. Jeah.

But anyway, if I could do all of this and have a unlimited and vast supply of bricks... christ on a bike, that's awesome right there. That was my one major problem: running out of bricks and having a limited supply of really useful parts, like the little spinning 4'er's. Ah man.

EDIT: I really hope the workshop isn't as fast and basic as that, though. What I'd really like is a full isometric grid which I can select the bricks I want (ANY bricks) and then I can then move them around the grid wherever I want. Sort've like building a house in The Sims... y'know.

That's all concept stuff. (The video is all concept stuff atm.)

But we will make a Lego Half-Life 2.net City. ARE YOU WITH ME?

That looks awesome.

I want in.

We shall construct our city, and then take to the land in our mighty war machines (yes, with lasers!) and crush our foes!

So aside from just building crap, me and a friend were talking about combat. Assuming there is some type of combat, imagine this.

A giant lego robot comes to town and just starts ruining everything, so you go to fight it (with god damn lasers of course) and as you attack/shoot it, pieces of it start to fall off, which other people who weren't attacking would use to build even stronger god damn lasers until the giant robot is no more.

This game has the possibility to be epic on so many levels :D

it seems like more people play lego games now than they play with the actual lego's.

Welcome to the age of computers! Why get off our lazy asses when we can do it virtually on the computer? Genius!

Lol, awesome. I can so picture trying to log off and being confronted by the error "not before you clean up you don't!" :P

Could be great. I see a very vast potential for them to bung this up. But if they pull it off, I'm there.

Still hiring for construction on that HL2.net city? :O

We're building a zarking citadel.

I'm on board for building a HL2.net city.

We should make a citadel, and then have a bunch of smaller buildings connected via skyways, each one for a specific subforum - OT, General Gaming, Music, etc.

the politics district should be interesting :)

We'll put a sign reading "free fire zone. Enter at own risk" on the door.

Mind you, can you imagine how awesome the Numbers vs Solaris lego war machine battles would be?

So yeah just some stuff from the articles:

As I hinted earlier this year, NetDevil has been signed on to develop a massively multiplayer online game with Lego.

I think, if done right, this could very well be the next evolutionary step in massively mulitplayer online games.

"As children around the world continue to spend more time online we are developing new and engaging ways for them to interact with our brand," said Lisbeth Valther Pallesen, Executive Vice President, Community, Education and Direct Division LEGO Group. "The LEGO brand represents construction, creativity and problem solving -- values that compliment the MMOG market. By merging the online world of social interaction with physical play, the LEGO brand is providing new experiences for children, as well as fans. NetDevil's technological capability, openness to work with a large community, and their enthusiasm for the LEGO brand made them a natural partner."

"Playing with LEGO bricks and developing online worlds are both creative activities. To bring them together is deeply professionally satisfying and we look forward to working with the LEGO team," said Scott Brown, President of NetDevil.

What I've heard is that the game could be sort of like Second Life but, you know, a game. The idea, I believe, is that you will be able to construct your own in-game content using the fun and familiar mechanic of building with real world Legos.

I suspect part of the reason NetDevil was selected is because of their amazing work with destructible environments, though I'm sure their enthusiasm for game development also played a large role in the decision.

We'll be meeting with the NetDevil guys, fellow Coloradoans, later this week and I'll make sure to ask all of the right questions. Like, does Lego have the go ahead to build Star Wars, Batman or their other IP into this game? SO HOT! Brian Crecente

The doorbell just rang, and it was a tip. From a LEGO AMBASSADOR. From LEGOLAND. I felt honoured just to be in his presence. Anyway, he was popping round to drop off a couple of bits of concept art for NetDevil's upcoming Lego MMO, Lego Universe, as well as a few morsels of info on the game/life-consumer. Info below, art in the gallery at the bottom.

# Seems the gameplay elements, Lego-building and social networking will all be taking place on the same screen.
# The game's being developed in very, very close consultation with Lego fans, who test out every aspect of the game as NetDevil are implementing it.
# They're hoping to have the game rolled out by mid-2008.
# There's one more point of info, but the translation's a tad confusing, so i'll just post it raw: "Ultimately the LEGO Group want to offer the unique experience to play with the LEGO brick both virtually and physically together with your friends from all over the world, and you can even change from the physically to the virtual play as you like - "You are in control"."

No idea what that last one means. But it certainly sounds exciting. Luke Plunkett

I think that last little thing means we'll be able to order things we build ingame like they do with that lego designer on thier site (Send you the exact pieces you need to build it and whatnot)

so long as I can step in with my Overlord Mech and kick brainwashed ass with my Lego Railgun of Facts I'll be happy

The Half-Life section must consist of Xen platforms!

You're both wrong. The Half-Life section would contain a 50-foot statue of lamar.

Something along the lines of this?

Giant statue of Gordon, inbound.

This looks to great. The concept if done right would be insane!

I'll make an F14... AND SHOOT DOWN THE BANSHEES!.. that get too near..

Eh.. F-22's will work better.
