This thread is for those of us who have purchased the Gold package.

What do you think of the soundtrack?
Is it getting you hyped?
What are your favorite tracks?

So far I've noticed that a few of the tracks seem to be Half-Life 1 tracks. They're mostly short and often end somewhat abruptly, which is very similar to the HL1 soundtrack. I do wish that they were longer.

So far my favorite tracks are 2 and 17. I love the baseline in 2, and 17 is quite peacefull, like a lull in the storm (but WAY too short). I haven't gotten through the whole thing yet but I'm pretty sure this is what I'll be listening to up until release.

I have only heard track 2 and I think its nothing special, really

same here..not sure which tracks I like the most yet

but I am definitely more hyped now that I have all the goodies..

was your box in good condition?my CE box was a little rumpled

but no holes or tears(thank Gordon)..

fedex must have a bunch of halo 2 fanboys working for them..

when I saw Unmarked1's box and it seriously looked like it had been punched

I got worried a bit..having worked in warehouses I know what a punched box looks like

as well as the more delicate contents of that box afterwards

I've listened to the soundtrack a few times, and my favorite tracks are: 1, 2, 12, 22, and 24, although I like all of them. 22 is probably my most favorite though :p. Little more subtle than 24, but still with same sound.

Are there any tracks that are the leaast bit "rock-ish"? I'm not really into the techno thing (although it suits the game well), I'm just hoping there will be times where I'm having a big-ass battle with the combine to some sweet guitar tunes and pounding drum beats.

I haven't heard the soundtrack, but I'm willing to bet that there are no rock parts in it. It would probably be hard to come across with a rock guitar without sounding like the end credits of a Resident Evil game.

Great, epic guitars are hard to pull off in serious games in my opinion, but if someone could make it work it would definately be Valve and their sound team/guy(?).

I guess my point is: Rock guitars in games sound cheap.

At least, I haven't heard it work in a serious game yet. I would like to be proven wrong.

I thought it was pretty good, but I meant in-game music. I should have been clearer.

Well how can you not like 1? Its the VALVe theme song! 24 must have been used in one of th binks because I've heard it before.

I haven't encountered any yet. HL1 did have one track that rocked (Track #9), but nothing here.

Valve did do it,. it was when you launched the missle.. rocked hard!

As much as i love rock, i hope there's none of it in hl2. It wouldn't fit in the half-life feel imo.

Just for the record, my shipment was fine. The damaged Gold that you saw was a reference in another thread from the Steam forums. I think that's the only one I've heard of that was messed up. Fortunately, everyone else's Gold seemed to arrive intact.

As for the soundtrack, I love that freakin' thing. Have been listening on my long-ass commute to work and while I work on the comp at home.

Gotta love that good old Track 1, that's sweet everytime. I hear the first note and think Half-Life. Track 2 is simple and the bass is great. I can't wait to hear it during a gunfight. 4 reminds me of Deus Ex, which also had exceptional music. 12 is great all the way through, quality quality quality. 13 plays... perhaps the first time you get a good view of the Citadel? 22, 24, 26 are all sweet, the ones I bought the disc for in the first place. There are many more I'm starting to love after hearing 'em a few times, and they're going to complement the game nicely.

I could go on and on, but for anyone who hasn't got to listen to it yet, just relax and be reassured that the soundtrack will fit HL2 perfectly and add a good deal to the experience.

if you think that rock doesn't work in games, play some FlatOut! nice going bugbear again!

Indeed.

In fact now that I've just read your post and quoted you, I've started humming it again. It's top notch. Still, I always preferred the techno/industrial type music that came with Half-Life. There's just something about the way it kicks in that's just right.

Worst soundtrack ever. I swear, whoever put that together must be tonedeaf.

That being said, rock can work well in racing games. FPSs, yes but not so easily,.

Im listening to it right now. I just got my package like a half hour ago. So far I like it. A lot better than I was expecting. I like techno anyways. :) 100% satisfied with my "Gold" package.

so far i have listened to about 6-7 tracks and the more i listen, the more i believe NiN would have been perfect for this soundtrack.
infact the soundtrack reminds me alot of NiN.

^^^I was thinking the same thing dude. Very moody and dark. Good stuff.

IMO, it just gets better and better.

unmarkedone,

could you just give us a snippet of 13 that possible is played during the first view of citidel, please please please.....

Doesnt seem quite that dark and twisted to me. More just heavy brooding..

I must say it again: Track 17 rocks! The lull in the storm, man! And its too f'n short!

Oh! That explains the distinctive sound :D no wonder it rocks.

I just downloaded them off the internet, damn 43 songs and they all suck so I erased them.

Thats not true. Tool was said to have been approched about doing the title music for Doom 3, but they didn't want to. And they didn't.

The person who made the title music for Doom 3 was Chris Vrenna. He is the drummer for NIN.

Source of my AWESOME Knowledge

So...it isn't Tool, and it isn't a tool ripoff...because of the fact that NIN and tool are quite similar in their tastes of atmosphere (in some ways).

But anyway, I've got a question for you people.

I just got my gold package BUT, I can't play the CD on my computer. I figure its some kind of security feature, but I don't really have any other CD player to use other than my PC.

When I put the CD in the drive, it dosn't even see that anything is there.

Anyone know what to do? Pleasea pleasea please!!!??

The chords used are distinct to the Tool sound. I heard it and thought "Tool" right away. And Tool, while also dark and twisted, is a step apart from NIN. So I'd say it definitly is a Tool ripoff.

Do other audio cds work? Dont know what to tell you,. dupe it in another PC? If you can't even see the audio tracks, you cant rip it there.. That does suck man.

hmm...use Windows Media player.
it should play the tracks.. it did for me.. i did try it with winamp first.. but for some reason winamp started acting up.

my normal CD player plays the sound track as well.. so try that.

When I first heard it I immediately though "TOOL" aswell, but the NiN sound isn't all that far removed from TOOL. I believe this was just Chris Vrenna going tor a dark, moody sound with plenty of rythm and some rocking guitar tunes, and it just happened to sound a little TOOL-ish. I certainly don't consider it a rip off.

/me waits anxiously for my gold package to come.

It does still have the Tool feel to it, I'm sort of glad they didn't do it. Doing a video game theme song seems a bit demeaning to tool. They're just better than that.

Other audio CDs work, the hl2 cd works in my other cd player (but that ones in the bathroom :( ) And WinAmp dosn't work, WMP dosn't work. It dosn't see any CD in the drive.
