Ok so Half Life 2 is imminently pre-beta, I was thinking, could some of the experts come on here and explain how long it usually takes for a game of HL2's size to go from testing to beta and then from beta to gold - and then available for retail.
Lets all try and work this out and maybe if we get some expert opinion we can come to a rough idea of a release date?

well if the beta is truly a few weeks away , and all the beta testing goes smooth, they should go gold around mid june, and then another 3 weeks, to get everything ready to ship, so mid july sounds right.

Only valve know what there beta stage means, There isnt a set path that all games take from Alpha > Beta > Release.

It all depends how valve split up there project cycle, All you need to worry about is that they say there gonna hit beta somtime after E3 (a matter of weeks) and that when they do they can give a more specific date for release.

It seems valve see's the beta stage as the time THEY see the game finished and ready to ship, and all that remains is the external testers, ratings commisions, vivendi etc have to test it and run those release candidate thingies.
