Lighting Adjustments

i seem to be bathed in darkness no matter what i do with my computers brightness settings. the general brightness of the screen is at 100% and i have turned the ingame brightness to the maximum setting. but even with my ingame flashlight on some parts are so dark i just blindly stumble about until i find my way. now i'm wondering, is this just part of HL2 or is my computer incapable of displaying currect lighting?

anyone else bugged by this, or is my pc jst crap? 1gb ram, ati radeon 9600 pro, intel pentium 4 3ghz, soundblaster audigy, not sure what motherboard i have, and i have a really old crappy display thats not very bright could just be that
