Just interested, what will the limitations be with regards plausable game types, i.e. could you make a 2D side scrolling platform game?

i think it would be possible, so what other things could be made? how about a sim city style management game? :o

Well, I think there's already a 2D mod for HL1. I can't remember who was working on it, but it was possible. On the other hand, I was wondering about its limits too... imagine you could create things like the sims online and things like everquest which are running constantly :o dunno but I think that this time, possibilities will be wider than ever. Just see the videos, with those cars... it gives you the idea of creating a HL2 mod of racing and such, this was already in UT2003, but it doesn't look that enjoyable.

To sum up: It'll be great :D

Re: Re: Limits to mod possibilities?

I wouldnt say HL2 is the best base to build a 2d platform game on :)

Limitations are subjective. It all depends on the person modding the game. A proffesional team could make just about anything out of Source and the SDK. But just about. I dont think we have really deep access, in for instance the rendering engine (Gabe noted some access, but not all). So we cant rewrite the graphics engine. But 99.9% of modders dont do that anyway, you want this base. Everything else is code, models and animations.

Instead of a 2D platform game (which is a lousy example), I pretty sure you could make a game like Warcraft 3 with it. Or a game like The Sims. Or sim city in real 3d (you got the 3d, so best to use it instead of fiddling with sprites or whatever :)). Just pick, and you can make it. Its not easy, its a crapload of code, but you could still do it, cause it is just that, code. And this code has nothing to do with the Source engine in itself.

Yeah, SimCity 3d. You can be a little guy and drvie around the city you have built and walk inside buildings and get a job.
